I won't be buying the new version. I will go back to reading my New American Standard version in fact. Not that I won't keep my NIV's, but it will not be my translation of choice anymore.
To each their own, but I'm opting out of supporting the old NIV.

I think you're making a good choice. In a word for word translation, the King James is the closest translation, even today, of the earliest manuscripts. The New American Standard is the second closest. IMHO, the NIV doesn't even come close. There are a few instances, I have found, when the translation of the NIV gives a much different impression of the meaning of the verse. I've found the words also lose the nuances contained in the KJV and NAS. I avoid the NIV as much as possible.
