The U.S. government has alerted airlines and law enforcement agencies that new intelligence indicates that Islamic terrorists have smuggled shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles into the United States.

Classified intelligence reports circulated among top Bush administration policymakers during the past two weeks identified the missiles as Russian-made SA-7 surface-to-air missiles or U.S.-made Stinger anti-aircraft missiles obtained covertly in Afghanistan, said intelligence officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

This article adds a piece of info: it states that our military in Saudi Arabia discovered Al Qaeda has different anti-aircraft millile systems. This is more specific than the WashTimes piece.

Steph made a comment on This Week with Sam and Cokie and quickly muffled a retraction. It seems like it was about the time that plane out of NYC lost it's tailfin. You might check the thread for the Sunday Morning Talking Heads on FR for the weekend after that NYC plane crash.

Well, IMHO it will take a bigger attack than 9/11 for many Americans to wake up. Anyone hear Sean Hannity's "Man on the Street" segments? Most people have no clue about what is going on. The whole thing is pathetic.

George Stephanopoulos made a major mistake on ABC in the wake of the recent World Trade Center attack. [Apparently he made the statement during the WTC attack coverage the morning of 9-11-01.]

"In my time at the White House," he said off-handedly, "(the situation room) was used in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, in the aftermath of the TWA Flight 800 bombing, and that would be the way they would stay in contact through the afternoon."

Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters at the Pentagon that U.S. military forces are on alert for attacks by portable missiles.

I don't wear tin hats. I do have this observation. I work in a building located near Pittsburgh airport. Landing planes come almost right overtop of us at an altitude of several hundred feet. Normally you can watch the horizon and see these planes approach on a straight path from several miles out. For the last 2 weeks, their approach habit has changed. They zig. They zag. They come in from the opposite direction and bank almost wings vertical to line up for the runway. The thought crossed my mind that maybe they knew something the rest of us didn't. Maybe this explains it.

A military analyst on Fox News just said a missile shot down flight 800. He said people were seen on a boat with the launcher. He said the government hid the information to not scare the public. He said after the latest warnings that the government has decided to release the information so it won't be blamed for "knowing". He was very angry how the government handled it.

I saw the same thing on Fox. His name is Bob Beckuakla (I know it is not spelled correctly, sorry about that), he is the Special Forces guy. He said it was two men in a small boat.

2 or 3 days ago I saw a flight way out of the normal flight path leaving Houston Hobby and at an unusually low altitude. It stuck out like a sore thumb.

Indeed! And for all the "If they had them they would use them" crowd: Evidently, Al Quaida does not just buy a weapon and fire it off at the first opportunity. It took over a year to build the bomb that blew up the Cole, and they waited for months after the bomb was complete. They will go for maximum chance of success plus maximum impact.

Caught the FNC military analyst segment this morning here. The 'two men in a boat' reports were widely circulated at the time of TWA 800 crash. I was, however, amazed to hear it on the tube this morning.

My first reaction yesterday to the FBI's SAM alert: Maybe they are being smuggled into our country inside Boeing 747 center fuel tanks. < /sarcasm>

"We don't have information that al Qaeda is planning to use these against commercial aircraft in the United States," an FBI official said. "However, we are passing the information along for people to remain alert to the potential use."
