Five days before Sept. 11, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice was warned that a terrorist attack inside the United States was imminent, a former U.S. Senator who headed up a blue ribbon commission on terrorism revealed late Tuesday.
"I've known the national security advisor, Professor Rice, for about 20 some years," former Colorado Sen. Gary Hart told WABC Radio's John Batchelor and Paul Alexander. "She was a supporter of mine in my first presidential campaign as a graduate student in Denver."
After giving a speech on the terrorist threat in Montreal on Sept. 5, Hart said he requested an urgent meeting with Dr. Rice in Washington.
"I said to her, 'You must move more quickly on homeland security. An attack is going to happen.'
"That was Sept. 6, 2001," Hart told WABC, without characterizing Dr. Rice's reaction.
The night before, Hart said, he issued the same warning to an air transportation group in Canada.
Three years ago Hart and former New Hampshire Sen. Warren Rudman co-chaired the U.S. Commission on National Security for the 21st Century, which warned specifically of a domestic terrorist attack.
In a Sept. 15, 1999 report the Hart-Rudman Commission concluded, "America will be attacked by terrorists using weapons of mass destruction and Americans will lose their lives on American soil, possibly in large numbers."

a terrorist attack inside the United States was imminentVery incriminating, although just possibly some information about where, when, who and how might have been helpful. < / > sarcasm

I've hear Hart speak urgently about the issue of terrorism a number of times, including on the Hill. Didn't get the attention he deserved quite obviously.

Why in the world would anyone take anything said by Gary Hart seriously?

"America will be attacked by terrorists using weapons of mass destruction and Americans will lose their lives on American soil, possibly in large numbers."
Wasn't this also one of Nostradamus' predictions? ~sarcasm off~

Hey Gary, wrong Rice Oooh, good one!

'You must move more quickly on homeland security. An attack is going to happen.' So, based on this information we were supposed to shut down the airlines?
I guess Gary Hart should be appointed head of homeland security.
To: mhking
Exactly. What did Gary Hart know and when did he know it?
His expertise is credited as being a panel he was on in 1999 when he said that we should focus on security.
Sounds like another voice saying that BUBBA CLINTON dropped the ball. Somehow Gary expected Rice and Bush to stop in 5 days the runaway train that had left the station a long time ago under a different conductor.

Nowhere in the article is the word imminent used other than the title. If (DemocRAT) Gary Hart had warned of an imminent attack, then that would imply that he had more specific information as to the time, place and method of an attack. If he did, then HE is guilty of not making it public on 6 September. Stated in the context given, it was most probably construed by Condi Rice that he was posturing in an attempt to regain some noteriety as an expert. More sour grapes and political grenade throwing IMO.

I came to that conclusion long before these guys. Sheesh, talk about stating the obvious.

What did Hart know and when did he know it? Nothing and he knew it on September 12th.
This is a cheap attempt to grab a headline from a guy who was before his time. If he'd come along a few years later maybe he could have been Clinton and become infamous in the Oval Office instead on on the yatch the Monkey Business.

Are planes now considered to be "Weapons of Mass Distruction"? If so, can we bomb all of the airports in the middle east as a part of our effort to erradicate all "Weapons of Mass Distruction" in their hands???

I don't know but didn't Hillary work on Barry Goldwater's campaign? Maybe she was just spying because a few years later she worked on the case against Nixon...
