While President Bush is doing very well with a 70%+ approval rating, he has done little to pass this approval rating on to his party. It may not even be possible to do so.

Bush's popularity is based almost entirely on his excellent war leadership. Imagine if their were no war - would conservatives have accepted Bush's spending spree, signing of CFR, etc. and maintain Bush's high approval ratings of their were no war? Should his excellent leadership end for any reason, Bush's administration could suffer politically.

Bush probably would have fought harder if he were not so worried about maintaining support for the war on terror. He knows how fickle the public is. And please don't forget the Jeffors defection.What kind of kick back has Jeffords recieved? When Bush took office pubbies had a slim control of both houses. I do recall the pubbies not being very supportive of the administration. I am relly mad at congressman porkers who claim to be conservative.

Strange, I read a review of the polls which suggested, just the opposite, that the Republicans were much more likely to motivate their bases, as opposed to the Democrats whose base approval rating was much lower.

There is something missing in the piece: logic. We should all stay home in November because we are dissatisfied with pork barrel spending and the fact that the demonrat sin-ate is holding up and rejecting conservative judges. If we stay home, we will get more demonrats in the congress leading to more pork barrel spending and less chance of getting conservative judges. Really smart.

I don't know where to start here. I'm in full agreement with Zack on this. I'm really sick and tired of Republican whinings of "What would you rather have? A bunch of Democrats in office?" In regards to voting; when in the hell did the choice come down between either stabbing yourself in the left or the right eye? I choose neither! Yes, yes lets drone on about how third party voters are throwing their votes away. My favorite line came from a conservative caller to Sean Hannity's radio program. "Having principles is fine but we have to win". Thank God our founding Fathers never abandoned their principles as quickly as this caller has. Sad as it is to say maybe the Republican party needs to die a quick death. There is little to distinguish them from their brother Democrats now. Hopefully a coalition of freedom loving people could raise a new party from the ashes. One that really was conservative versus the one that now falsely claims to be.

The most amazing thing about this article is that National Review seems surprised at all of this.

It was obvious before Dubya even won the primary that he only looked conservative when compared to algore.  But, when you back off and look at where he sets on the whole scale, there is no doubt that he is the best Democrat that has run or won the Presidency in years.

The following is a scale that I created prior to the Presidential election.  Many head-in-the-sand Republicans ranted and raved at what this scale said.  I wonder how they feel today.
