My wife is in Shawnee, Oklahoma and is heading back to Memphis tomorrow. Do you have any advice on how she should reroute her trip? Or is it best to just continue on I-40 east and take the detour?

I am from that area and drive across that bridge several times per week. Sure glad you are ok.

No, although they did break in on September 11 coverage to tell us that the big high school football game for that Friday had not yet been canceled.

Klayman is a low-life scumbag and fits in well with the clintons and daschle. I go back to my original theory that he was working for the clintons and fooled conservatives into sending him all that money and in return he got discovery on all the lawsuits and shared it with the clintons so they knew exactly what was going on!
As they say -- that's my story and I am sticking to it!
As for this accident on I-40, I have been on that stretch and told my daughter last summer I was never driving that bridge again in Eastern OK -- it gave me the creeps to be over all that water! But then I don't have a reason to go visit AR either! Going to listen to the 10 o'clock news to get an update!

Here's the big question: after the (unfortunate) dead are removed and the broken bridge span removed, how fast will they start work immediately to repair the bridge? Given that Interstate 40 through Oklahoma is a major transportation route through the state my guess is that the bridge rebuilding project will be a fast-track expedited project that hopes to get the span rebuilt by the middle to end of October 2002.

I am really starting to wonder if we have some shills in here whos only duty is to point out that terrorists could not be behind any disasters that happen. Good point. In the same vein, I'm beginning to wonder if we don't have a few Muslim sleeper FReepers who have been assigned to watch the evening news and post "dem damn dirty mØØse limbs!" screeds after every accident in the US. Heck, even if they didn't cause incident x, y, or z, it's a cheap and effective way to whip up paranoia and maximize the efforts of the 9/11 attackers.

Since I live here in southeastern NC I don't think I need to ask directions from anyone. I have also driven the entire length of I-40, from Barstow, CA to Wilmington, NC.

I didn't read all the posts preceeding this, as there are too many. However, in case no one has posted this info
the barge operator is hospitalized and undergoing tests. The company claims he passed out or blacked out just before the accident.Incidentally, there is a large Islamic community just 25 miles from the collapse site, near Sallisaw, OK. (Elohim City)
Also interesting, IMHO, I looked up Elohim City on mapquest. It was not found. However, this post has taken me about 45 minutes to accomplish, because my computer shut down and I couldn't log on for a while immediately following that search. Perhaps the search alerted someone....</tin foil hat comment>

Since I live here in southeastern NC I don't think I need to ask directions from anyone. How about this direction: Verify the name of the FReeper you are correcting, and read a few posts (#296, 309, 310) that were recommended.
p.s. I lived in NC for 31 years.
