I think JustAnAmerican is simply hearing about more of these incidents. They've always been going on but prior to 9/11 weren't considered newsworthy enough for anything more than local coverage.

As for airliners crashing, the truth is that accident rates are such a tiny fraction of what they were even two decades ago that the few that do occur get a disproportionate amount of ink.

Researching as I write this, and I would agree to the extent that the "news Outlets" have published more of those types of events in recent years so that may have colored my opinion. However, I am finding that rear end collisions in the US between two trains are almost non existent. Same for commercial jetliners just "Breaking Up".
