Yep, fuel-air explosions can be very, very nasty. It's rare that the mixture is united when the air-to-fuel ratio is exactly right, but when it does the results are devastating.
FWIW, I have degrees in chemistry and chemical engineering. The scene doesn't sound like a typical meth lab explosion. You never know, though -- that's why I'm witholding judgement.

Let me ask an "idiot" question. Could this actually be a "dirty bomb?" In other words, just how big an explosion is necessary to start to spread radiation over an area? If smoke is rising, duck and cover. In a dirty bomb, the radiation is blown into the sky with the other debris and carried by the wind. It eventually falls to the ground contaminating the area where it lands.

A crime scene yes, but call in the FBI???? This is not the usual procedure is it?I would imagine that given our current climate of foreign religious fanatics wanting to blow us up, along with recent threats on apartment buildings, I would guess that yes, the FBI may be interested. What do you think?

Thank you for posting that story. How tragic; that poor girl's family. I always hope the cause is accidental and not some arsonist on the loose. I remember when we lived in So. Philly it seemed like every day on the news there was a fire burning down a home somewhere. I had never seen anything like it, being from CA. Our fires out here are wild mostly, in the hills and such.
Now, with today's explosion here in the valley, you can only wonder what's behind it. The recent warnings, combined with the unfortunate seedy nature of this area (meth labs galore), you can only hope it's accidental for those involved.

Here in central New York State they have seat belt checks, inspection stickers and hand-held phones all over the place today. Just went to the local supermarket and FIVE State Troopers were checking to see if folks had their seat belts fastened, or whatever. And this in the midst of a high terrorist alert.

We noticed the same thing in Phily - fires every single day! Amazing........
They were showing pictures of this one earlier this morning and it was a horrible blaze....... they interviewed a man who helped pull some people to safety and he was just numb looking......he said they couldn't get the girl and you could see in his eyes what torment he was going through......

My understanding is that it's in the 5300 block of Newcastle Avenue, near the intersection of Ventura.

The way I see it, 2 possibilities: 1. Meth Lab 2. Ornery valley separatists attracting attention to their cause. The notorious Tofu Sayef!?

They just busted one in our business complex, not a 1/4 mile from the Van Nuys airport, and 1/2 mile from a school. I thought what you said, until that.

A patch of grass has caught fire in Chaska, Minnesota!
Let me repeat ... a patch of prairie grass, IS ON FIRE, in Chaska, Minnesota.
There is no evidence, I repeat no evidence, of terrorism. Let's all take a deep breath, stay calm, and form a single file line and proceed down tunnel 3 to bunker 4a.

hahahahaha! Thanks! I needed that!

I looked for it in maps.yahoo.com and I think I recognize the area. From what I remember, it's wall to wall apartments and condos.
It's wonderfully convenient to Ventura Blvd (our main shopping drag, for those who don't know), but I hate that kind of hive-like housing and would never live there.

Meth labs have a tendency to smell real bad. That's why most all of them now prefer the rural climate.

......he said they couldn't get the girl and you could see in his eyes what torment he was going through...... In a radio interview the other night, the highest ranking NYFD member to make it out of WTC alive (the building actually collapsed on him and 15 other firefighters), he said he remembered another incident when several of his men were trapped in the basement of a collapsed burning building. They had radio contact back and forth, but they didn't make it to them in time. You could hear in his voice that it is something he will never recover from, and probably doesn't want to. Those things haunt forever, and seem to make some people stronger. People like the man who tried to get the girl who died this morning will never forget it, or her. He will always carry a piece of her with him, whether he knew her or not. It says a lot that he tried.
