PAPER: Rock Creek Park Predator Interviewed by Police Investigating Levy Death Thu May 23 2002 12:52:01 ET
D.C. Metropolitan Police Department officials investigating the death of Washington intern Chandra Levy have interviewed a man serving a 10-year prison sentence for attacking two women in Rock Creek Park last year, ROLL CALL DAILY is planning to report on Thursday.
MORE
D.C. Metro Police investigators have "talked to" Ingmar Guandeque, who was arrested in July 2001 after attacking two females (one in May and one in July) who were jogging along the Broad Branch trail in Rock Creek Park. Levy's decomposed body was found Wednesday along the Broad Branch trail in a heavily wooded area.
A second official close to the Levy investigation said that while Guandeque was interviewed after Levy's disappearance last year, investigators are now taking a closer look at him since the intern's body was discovered.
"Clearly there are some coincidences and links -- just because of the proximity of where he [committed his crimes]," said a source close to the investigation.
ROLL CALL's Amy Keller reports: Guandeque, who lived on the 1400 block of Somerset Place Northwest, was arrested last summer and sentenced in February 2002 to two concurrent terms of 10 years' imprisonment for a pair of assaults of female joggers in the Broad Branch section of the park.
The first attack occurred in mid-May 2001, at 6:30 p.m., about two weeks after Levy disappeared. In that case, Guandeque came upon an unnamed female jogger, attacking her from behind while brandishing a knife.

Geez that's irresponsible!

The backpack was mentioned several times yesterday on FNC, not only by reporters but Ramsey at least once. That was the first I had heard of a backpack, when Ramsey mentioned it.

Condit pads around his Washington office in slippers and a sweater like a Central Valley incarnation of Jimmy Carter, but he rides a Harley when he goes back home every weekend to see his family. He keeps a bicycle stashed in his office to take off through Rock Creek Park during legislative lulls. He is radically moderate.

Oh I think I was referring to the story about the other women he assaulted. I guess it would be hard for a murdered woman to give an account of the crime.

A man of... contrasts. {:-\

OK - I thought the "murdered" was 'operative.'
Still like to know what Kasich knows, tho.

The backpack may have been what made the police so sure the remains were Chandra's before they had made the forensic match. They may have had a description of her backpack ever since they began investigating the case, and the contents of the backpack may have clinched the identification.

If you read Chandra Levy's bio, she was not exactly a push-over. In high school, she completed a wilderness program (when boys dropped out), she joined the Explorer Scouts Police Program, where she served as an undercover agent to catch retailers selling alcohol to youngsters, she kept in shape and she was nobody's fool. No kdding? Well, that puts a little more light on things. She probably could have defended herself fairly well, unless she felt that she didn't need to defend herself and her attacker was someone she trusted.

My husband has been a jogger for more than 30 years, including trail running, and he has never worn a backpack while jogging.
Now, was a backpack found with Chandra's body?

http://www.usaradio.com/This is the URL for USA Radio.com. They are currently displaying a visual "Breaking News" which states that the DC police are questioning "a man who was CONVICTED OF MURDERING TWO WOMEN in Rock Creek Park last year." And they are STILL reporting that on the news.
PEOPLE, PEOPLE, can't you see what they're doing?? The guy is serving ten years for assault, but the media now has him convicted for murder. Of course, NOW all the Conditit defenders will believe that Condidn't.
Talk about spinning the news!!! I just emailed them. Please do the same. This is an OUTRAGE.

One source familiar with the probe said police believe Miss Levy made a practice of visiting Mr. Condit's apartment straight from her job or night school, bringing her gym bag, backpack and purse. The source said Mr. Condit told police she never was in his apartment alone and was admitted each time through a security system.

I guess I misunderstood Core. He's still talking to the Roll Call reporter.

...He kept a bicycle in his office. Said it was because he liked to ride at the Park. With a murdered Chandra Levy on the back. I see a Monty Python skit here..
...Ooops, let's get that leg back up here.....Oh, watch the hand ,watch the hand...

If he followed his mo and knocked her into the ravine like the other womanIt's not yet established that the body was found in a ravine -- there's been some suggestion (on this thread and elsewhere) that it was found at a higher elevation than the jogging path. According to the DC police chief, it was far removed from the path, near "rocky cliffs," and "rough terrain."
