U.S. to sue Florida over 2000 voting
MSNBC ^ | 5/21/02

Posted on 05/21/2002 2:52:19 PM PDT by Mean Spirited

The government will file three lawsuits against Florida counties alleging voting rights violations resulting from the bitterly disputed 2000 presidential election, a Justice Department official said Tuesday.

TWO OTHER LAWSUITS also will be filed, in Missouri and Tennessee, by the department’s civil rights division, Assistant Attorney General Ralph Boyd told the Senate Judiciary Committee. The lawsuits will allege disparate treatment of minority voters, improper purging of voter rolls, “motor voter” registration violations and failure to provide access to disabled voters, Boyd said. Other charges, he said, include failing to allow voters with limited proficiency in English to have assistance at the polls and failing to provide bilingual assistance.

Kiss the Senate good-bye.

Doubt it will make a difference. The news tonight will be the terrorist threats against NYC landmarks.

failure to provide access to disabled voters

What's the problem? They let dead people vote. In Missouri they let a dead man be elected. How much more disabled can you be?

I'm waiting for someone to say this is just another brilliant political move.

Are Ashcroft's hands tied in cleaning up Justice or has he been infected with Bush's "can't we all get along and move on" virus?

Just heard on Fox the investigation started with the Clinton admin (they didn't waste any time).

I can't even post what I'd like to say because I'd get tossed. Just when you think it can't get stupider...

Let me guess, it's the same three counties Gore wanted the recount in.

Are you kidding me? You think it's right that Bush got elected via corruption? Now if you really pay attention to what's going on here you will find in the lawsuit that these were minor problems that wouldn't of effected the outcome of the election but neverless hurts our democracy and should be corrected. Sigh.

I WAS confident we could, until this came out. This keeps Carnahan in, and probably will fire up enough so-called "progressives" that Gordon Smith gets taken out in Oregon. Figure Jeb's now in for a tough time in Florida, too. And Cleland will get a big turnoutof the black vote for this, too.

Justice Department to File Lawsuits From 2000 Election
By Jesse J. Holland

WASHINGTON (AP) - The government will file three lawsuits against Florida counties alleging voting rights violations resulting from the bitterly disputed 2000 presidential election, a Justice Department official said Tuesday.

Two other lawsuits also will be filed, in Missouri and Tennessee, by the department's civil rights division, Assistant Attorney General Ralph Boyd told the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The lawsuits will allege different treatment of minority voters, improper purging of voter rolls, "motor voter" registration violations and failure to provide access to disabled voters, Boyd said.

Other charges, he said, include failing to allow voters with limited proficiency in English to have assistance at the polls and failing to provide bilingual assistance.

Florida's voting system endured intense scrutiny after the 2000 election, including a recount and protests that went all the way to the Supreme Court before George W. Bush was declared the winner of the state - and the presidency.

Several groups, as well as dozens of black members of Congress, have alleged that black voters were kept from voting in Florida and other states on Election Day and ballots of others were systematically discarded.

Boyd refused to name the cities or counties that will be sued, but he said the lawsuits would be filed within the next two months. "It will be well in advance of the primaries for the November 2002 elections," he said.

The lawsuits in Florida cover particular counties, while the ones in Tennessee and Missouri deal with cities, he said.

"My hope, my aspiration and my expectation is that in each of those we'll reach an enforceable agreement prior to the filing of the lawsuit," Boyd said. Even so, he indicated the suits still would be filed.

He said the counties and cities are cooperating in the Justice Department's investigation and have acknowledged "certain deficiencies we have identified."

Boyd said the lawsuits are the result of more than 11,000 complaints from voters after the election. He said the complaints were whittled down to 14 active investigations and the five potential lawsuits.

"What we need to make sure is that we take steps quickly enough to ensure that the problems that occurred in the last election don't occur in the next election," said Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, a possible candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004.

Boyd agreed on the importance of moving promptly but said it was more important to proceed carefully and "get it right without regard to the political implications for anyone."

"We're going to follow the investigative trail, the evidence wherever it goes without regard to politics and without regard to whose, if anyone's, ox is being gored," he said.

This is MSNBC. Please wait for a second source and further clarification. No one suffered more and knows more about what happened during election 2000 than George and Jeb Bush. They know every dirty trick and lie played by the left over those months and if Mr. Boyd needs help, we're there.

Good for Bush. Voter fraud did occur and it was against the GOP. I hope this case levels the field.

This is what happens, when the d*mb*ss Bush Administration does NOT clean out the JustUs Department of the Clintonistas. They haven't gotten rid of any of the Clinton sozis at the FBI, CIA, EPA, INS or anywhere else.

You think this will have that big of an effect? I don't think so. The reason I am doubting is that Bush's coattails aren't even remotely as long as people on here are thinking wishfully.

There is no evidence he will be filing such charges. The charges are only going to be those that are from complaining minority voters. This is BS and I am pissed at Bush for this.

The left was going rudderless and flailing away wildly. Now they have something to hang their lie machine on.

They have a new reason to block judicial nominations, and to block anything else proposed. We're going to see black turnout up big time, and that bails Carnahan and Cleland out.

What about the vote fraud?

They don't care about that.

Don't you know. Certain kinds of offenses can only be commited against "minorities", not by them. Hate crime, voting "irregularities", etc. Get with the program. ;O)

In any case, this means the Dems will probably keep the Senate. We're going to need a miracle to have a prayer of taking it back and keeping Lincoln Chafee or someone like him from changing it over by crossing the aisle.
