Ally McBeal was the archetype of feminism. She was highly educated. She had a career, she had lots of money, she had lots of friends, she had lots of good times, she became a pardner in a Boston law firm. She represents everything that is good about America and its ability to transform women into something meaningful.
On February 2,1998 she said " I distort the law completely beyond meaning...... it's my job". Taken together along with the numerous story lines involving failure of liberal icons Ally McBeal rubbed the noses of liberalism in it's own dodo.
The final episode was about the constant theme of the series.... Ally Mcbeal is a failure. American liberal feminism she represents is a failure. American women who have followed the dream are failures as are all the young represented by the others in the firm dedicated to one objective.... making money.
All on the series were human failures. That is till the end... Fish somehow saw the light and took a redeeming step towards normalcy and salvation. He got married.
I quit watching the show years ago but tuned in last night. I was not disappointed. Ally is still a failure and apparently will remain in that condition. Her Boston upbringing and terminal liberalism would not allow her to seek true love with "the Bisquit" where it could truly be found.
