Second Freeper Postal Match - Rifles
CapandBall | 05/20/02 | CapandBall

Posted on 05/20/2002 4:53:14 PM PDT by CapandBall

Following Free Republic's successful & fun first postal match (How about a Freeper Postal Match?) for pistols, I'm sponsoring a rifle match. A "postal match" is conducted by mail, hence the name "postal" and should not be confused with a contest that involves shooting up your co-workers in a rage.

Shooters in different parts of the country compete against each other in a contest of marksmanship. Shooters are mailed numbered targets which they shoot. The targets are returned via the mail (hence "postal") and scored. Obviously, the honor system comes into play here.

The rules (up to this point) for this match are as follows:

1> A rimfire and a centerfire rifle are required. You will need 30 rounds for each weapon.
2> Iron sights only. No scopes, red-dots, lasers, etc.
3> Diatance is 100 yards.
4> Ten shots each position; standing, sitting, and prone for each type of rifle.
5> Ten minutes for ten shots, each position.
6> The following are not allowed:
...a> match rifles
...b> match ammo
...b> use of spotting scopes between shots
...c> compitition type "cuffed" slings
...d> shooting jackest

You can see the result of the First Freeper Postal Match here: First Freeper Postal Match Results!

There are 6 targets total, all type SR-21, that you will receive in the mail. We have 8 confirmed for this match so far, and need 7 more to fill it out, 15 total. To date I have snail mail addresses for:

Shooter 2.5
NY.SS-Bar9
ctdonath2
umgud
KG9 Kid
chookter
M1911
CapandBall

Freep mail me with a mailing address if you are interested. We had some problems using regular mail in the last match, so I'll probley use priority mail. First come first serve.

Sorry, a 513S for sporter would have been all right but not when it's a 513T MatchMaster. The Remington 513T has a heavy match barrel. No match rifles, no match ammo.

That's OK, got a ancient Win72a (stock cut down for 12yo) that shoots OK.

Centerfire w/o scope is limited for me too.

A 209/50 Encore OK, caps fire in the center, ten in ten? (just kidding). Otherwise its a mini14 beyond it's range or another 30/30 win94.

Fun anyway, looking forward to it.

That's perfect. I've got a Sunday off the beginning of June and can get out and do the shooting. Maybe I'll watch Full Metal Jacket for inspiration.

Try "Enemy at the Gates" from the book "War of the Rats" (as always, the book is much better than the movie). Sniper wars - Russian Mosin Nagant vs. German Mauser 98.

"...got a ancient Win72a (stock cut down for 12yo) that shoots OK."

Hmmm... I have an equally elderly Winchester 69a that I was thinking about using. Mine is the detachable magazine model, where yours is the tube feed, IIRC. Yes, they do shoot nicely. You could check with Gunpartscorp.com; they might have one of the Model 69 (or 75) target-model stocks. It could be whittled down to a nice sporter stock.

I might also dust off my old Win320. It's a real oddball - an Aussie-built rimfire that Winchester sold in the '70s. Turns out the guy who designed it is the same guy who later started the original Kimber of Oregon. My "Proto-Kimber" shares some parts with the original Kimber 82. Guess I'll see which one like the 100-yd. target better. As for centerfire, I'm still pondering which to use.

Targets arrived in Mesquite, Texas and the shooting lease has four foot high weeds. I don't have any shooting matches for the next couple of weeks so it shouldn't be any problem to get the targets back before then. The 1903A3 is still in limbo land and I think I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Isn't there a 300 yard range somewhere near Greenville? I tried to find it after our match in Paris but after wandering around for a couple of hours, I went home. Paris is the third Sunday of the month but they shut down for the real "cold" and real hot months.

Targets received today, but I won't be able to do anything with them until I get back from South Dakota, around the 15th.

Thanks for the source on the stock. The stock on this one was cut down to about a 12.5-13" length of pull when I was a kid (had the extra piece too, just saw it in the 80s). But it's in good shape and my recollection is it shot pretty well, so it might be fun to try. Probably better that my light barrel 10/22 with those *hitty sights. I'm looking forward to it.

Win320. It's a real oddball - an Aussie-built rimfire that Winchester sold in the '70s.

Interesting, this may be the only rimfire in the shoot that is not a .22. Do you still have or can you find find ammo for it?

I'm glad to see that the USPS "Priority mail" is holding true to their claim of 2-3 day delivery, at least for some of you.

In the meantime, do you have a bolt-action military rifle, such as a Mauser, Mosin-Nagant or Enfield?

I'll be shooting my match with a shooter-grade Pattern 14 Enfield (by Winchester), and a Mossberg model 44US (with the original front globe and rear aperture sights).

I hope I do well. If I don't, at least I know it's not the hardware's fault.

"Interesting, this may be the only rimfire in the shoot that is not a .22."

The Winchester Model 320 could shoot .22 short, long and long rifle. This match is making me relive a lot of .22 shooting with the Boy Scouts. I wish I knew the names of the rifles I shot back then.

Would it be too hot to hold a shoot in Vegas in August at FRiva?

Ok shooters, the targets seem to be arriving. Mindful that this is for fun, and without trying to be pedantic, and in addition to the rules already outlined, I want to make sure the rules are clear. With the 6 targets, you will shoot at 100 yards each of the following.

1> rimfire standing, 10 shots, 10 minutes
2> rimfire sitting, 10 shots, 10 minutes
3> rimfire prone, 10 shots, 10 minutes
4> centerfire standing, 10 shots, 10 minutes
5> centerfire sitting, 10 shots, 10 minutes
6> centerfire prone, 10 shots, 10 minutes

Also, as to restriction:

No spotting while shooting for score- means no optics of any kind; telescopes, binoculars, monoculars, etc.

No bipods, supports, or rests of any kind. In prone your rifle may not be touching the ground.

You may kneel instead of sit for the sitting stages if you wish.

You may shoot these 6 targets in any order you wish.

You have unlimited time between targets.

On each complete target (lower left) include the following information:

1> Rifle/caliber/ammo
2> position (standing, sitting, or prone)
3> score (include a count of 10s, 9s, 8s, 7s, 6s, 5s, and M-misses) I'll render final scores, just help me out here.
4> Freeper Name

When complete return all targets to me using the same service, USPS priority mail. A final return postmark date will be set when everyone has recieved their targets.

Anything I forgot? Don't shoot your eye out!

I'm showing my ignorance, I thought it was some sort of an odd-ball Aussie down-under rimfire 32 caliber.

Is there any rimfire besides a 22? (short, long, mag, etc?)
