This is an extremely minor technically, but for anyone interested, most cities have flags as well. If you're into more local displays, you can check with your city if they see if they have an icon for it. My city has only 20,000 people but we have a city flag (a dull one with a Evergreen tree on it). Here is what I found for the cities you listed:

Flag OF CHICAGO
The red stars on the municipal flag shall be designated from the hoist outwards as follows: Fort Dearborn; The Great Chicago Fire of October 8-10, 1871; The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893; The Century of Progress of 1933. (many of us in Illinois have lobbied to add a fifth star to represent the bulls six championships!) The blue stripes stand for the Chicago River and its two branches. The seal, right, bears the date on which Chicago was incorporated as a city When suspended from windows or over a street, the municipal flag may be pointed or notched. The municipal standard is made of silk, and fringed with gold.

FLAG OF NORFOLK
The City of Norfolk flag was was authorized in 1899 -- as the result of a wish by the people fathers to present a standard to the people of Virgina. The mermaid was a nod to the city's coastal location and Navy Yard, the logo a representation of the city's dominating spirit. The flag was originally made by Miss Kate Denson. A bookkeeping entry of November 1899, revealed the cost of making the first ensign to be $52.

FLAG OF DETRIOT
The city flag shows French fleurs-de-lis, British lions, and American stars and stripes to represent the three nations that have controlled Detroit. The city seal symbolizes the Detroit fire of 1805 and the city's rebirth. It bears the city's mottoes, Speramus Meliora--"We hope for better things" and Resurget Cineribus--"It shall rise again from the ashes". (Wishful thinking on their part)

FLAG OF AUSTIN -------------
Could not find any info on how they came up with this design. No larger photos, either.

FLAG OF LOS ANGELES
The city's flag was adopted on Sept. 4, 1931, the 150th anniversary of the founding of Los Angeles. The city seal symbolizes Los Angeles' history under the governments of Spain, Mexico, the California Republic, and the U.S.

FLAG OF LAS VEGAS
See Flag of Austin. The city website does say they have a city flag and seal though!
