[history]
A New Bedford man hired to help parents combat drug abuse in that city's schools resigned yesterday, two days after he was arrested as he allegedly picked up 44 pounds of marijuana shipped from California.
Michael J. Currin, a New Bedford High School graduate, pleaded not guilty to possessing marijuana with intent to distribute and selling drugs within 1,000 feet of a school. He handed in his resignation to Michael Longo, who will become superintendent of the New Bedford school system this summer, Longo said.

You have to admit, the school district picked an expert in the subject matter.

Good grief - 44 pounds of pot? I'm sure there's an innocent explanation...the guy has glaucoma, and it's for personal consumption...yeah, that's it...

At one-hundred dollars an ounce, that's over seventy thousand dollars. I mention that just to point out that it's very unlikely that someone would send $70,000 worth of merchandise to the wrong address.

"...$70,000 worth..."Depends on the grade. This could be worth a quarter of a million on the street. What puzzles me is why the police didn't wait to actually catch him in a sale. He could easily claim in court that he had no idea what these packages contained, never ordered such packages, and was loading them in his car to return them to the post office -- like an honest citizen.

"...drives a new beemer..."The articles didn't say it was new, just that it was a BMW 318 sedan, a model that was in production as far back as 13 years. Here's a well-kept 1991 318 sedan that just sold for a mere $9,500 -- this is about half what a new Honda Accord would cost.

no discount for volume purchasing?
To: vin-one
...and
Kelley blue book for that 1991 318, even in excellent condition, is only about 3K.

You know, on another thread, we're strongly considering the possibility that many of our favorite FReeper Drug Warriors are in fact dealers themselves looking to protect their investment. This adds more fuel to the fire...

I thought $100 an ounce was pretty cheap.

Ok, I made a leap of faith,
I just thought the whole thing was kinda ironic.

The people making money on both sides of the law on the WOD can be counted on to be the most fierce opponents of legalization.

Reminds me of an old Baloo cartoon (don't have a copy to post):
(Jock to counsellor) Sure, I'll take a drug test - I know a lot about drugs!

Sweet irony ...

more like $200 per oz if the stuff is decent, a quick 140K. guess they got an expert, he just forgot to tell the shipper to include one layer of talcum powder in between the dope and second layer of wrapping (drug dogs dont like it, but wont "alert" on it), so I am told....
