Sanchez should clarify ambiguous position on gun control

5/16/02

AUSTIN – Continuing his $30+ million attempt to buy the governor’s mansion via television advertisements, the Tony Sanchez campaign is airing an ambiguous ad stating that the candidate will support gun ownership rights as governor, but apparently only for sportsmen. In the ad Sanchez states, “If the legislature sends me a bill restricting sportsmen’s rights, I’m going to send it right back. I won’t allow those kinds of laws.”

“Tony Sanchez is once again attempting to avoid a serious discussion of real issues by airing lightweight television ads that don’t say anything substantive about what he plans to do as governor,” said Susan Weddington, Republican Party of Texas Chairman. “Apparently, Sanchez mistakenly believes that only hunters have the right to bear arms. Sanchez should clearly state whether he will oppose gun control laws for all Texans, not just sportsmen.”

AD TRANSCRIPT

“Hunting and fishing is a way of life. It’s how to teach our children values. In Texas we have to protect that way of life. For me a big part of it is protecting the rights of sportsmen. We don’t need more gun laws. Instead of going after law-abiding citizens, let’s vigorously enforce the laws in the books and go after criminals. If the legislature sends me a bill restricting sportsman’s rights, I’m going to send it right back. I won’t allow those kinds of laws. As governor my job is to protect those rights.”

"Sportsmen's rights" .......OK, sure thing. That's some double-speak. What about the right to defend life and liberty, Tony? What about friends and family?

Any politician that uses the term "sportsmen" related to the gun issue is an automatic enemy. This means that they have no appreciation of why people own guns or the REAL reason for the Second Amendment. Sanchez isn't getting my vote, period - and I don't care how he clarifies this position in the future.
