It depends upon the type of mask. In my first job out of college, I had daily contact with open tanks containing thousands of gallons of solution with a pound or more of cyanide per gallon. It's perfectly safe unless ingested or placed in contact with acids. It has a distinctive almond odor. Most any clinic and certainly all hospitals have sodium thiosulfate on hand for treating cyanide victims.
If you're more than a block away from the site, you're safe unless there was an extraordinary release of cyanide.

Good Question! Maybe some New York FReeper could call up a Local Channel to see if they are rushing to cover this.

Any new info? Still nothing on the Cable News networks.
To: dogbyte12
No news outlets are reporting this as yet. News 12 Long Island isn't even reporting it.

As to what went down in Mexico, I see no link - these guys would have to be tripping on No-Doz, and Al-Queda is most methodological.

Thanks for the common sense info. Feel much better. I hate the smell of almonds.

Mayor John Spencer stated that the situation is under control and that it is not an airborne contaminant.
Any indication of suspected cyanide gas or other poison may have been consumed by residents in a fourth floor apartment at 223 Nepperhan Avenue in Yonkers.
Several blocks in the area remain quarantined.

Reports say several hundred people have been quarantinedThis would not be cyanide. It would be more like a communicable disease of some sort, or a bio contaminate. Cyanide disperses. It is only dangerous in a confined area or if ingested.

"... [Cyanide] is perfectly safe unless ingested or placed in contact with acids." With the prevalence of pool supply stores doing heavy business preparing for summer, copious amounts of hydrochloric acid should be pretty easy to come by without attracting any attention.

You bet this is breaking news, and this may be the only way some FReepers in that area get to find out. I don't think any moderator would be so rash as to deny this information to those who could be most affected by it.
Can anyone tell me if there are a lot of West African immigrants in this neighborhood? I'm thinking Ebola or some sort of hemorrhagic fever.

There's absolutely no point to quarantine folks because of cyanide exposure. It's not contagious.

The timing is right ---the cyanide stolen in Mexico Sunday would make it to NY easily by now.
