The USO Canteen FReeper Style
Honors our Disabled American Veterans
The odds were, this is the last day of your life, but you still fought for your country.
You believe in freedom of speech and freedom of religion and you still believe that your kids should have health and happiness in their education.
Think of what these men endured to keep our good way of life so the future will be safe for all your children.
All over America tonight Disabled American Veterans will go to bed without adequate health care for themselves and their families.
At the end of the Revolutionary War, George Washington asked Americans to remember that his soldiers purchased freedom at "the price of their blood." Nothing, he added, could be more painful "than to behold those, who have shed their blood and lost their limbs in the service of the country
compelled to beg their bread from door to door."
Unfortunately, some veterans were forced to beg on the streets after losing arms, legs or sight in the American Revolution! And, while today's VA provides better service and care than veterans get anywhere else in the world, this has not always been the case. There have been other moments in our nation's history when disabled veterans ranked low on the public policy agenda.
Being wounded as a result of defending America's Freedom means far more than sacrificing mere blood and bone. Combat is not a movie or T.V. program where the characters get up at the end and walk off the stage. Injuries received in battle last a life time. Serious injuries that seemed to heal in a young man, tend to return with a vengeance as the man ages.
They fought the good fight and they sacrificed for the greatest Nation the World has ever known. They fought for our FREEDOM.
We prayed to God for their safety.
They all left their loved ones,
And their lives that they had known.
They departed to an unfamiliar land.
Risking their lives and making so many sacrifices.
Being away from family and friends,
Giving up what most can't even comprehend.
They protected our rights, our freedom, and the rights of others,
So that we could have and enjoy freedom in our land.
Please help to protect the rights of our Veterans.
You can contact your local VFW Post, The American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans Of America, or Veterans Of The Vietnam War.
We owe these men and women a debt that we can never truly repay!
Our Disabled American Veterans stood up for us, under the absolute worst conditions, and they paid a tremendous price.
Let's stand up for our Disabled Veterans!
The Purple Heart is given to all American Military Personnel wounded or killed while in defense of this great Nation. The medal displayed here, the Purple Heart more than anything else illustrates the terribly high price of our freedom

I hope FR never is down like it was yesterday, but wanted to let everyone know there's a Guest Room for FReepers on Free Dominion, which is like a FR for Canada. It would be a good place for us to hang our cyber hats during times we can't get to FR's USO Canteen.
Here's the link to Free Dominion. Click on 'Forum' to find the FReeper Guest Room.

Wow ....
{:-( What a long boring day Wednesday was. Hope everyone is back and takes the time to read this thread before moving on to today's.
I was forced to work in the yard yesterday. Didn't know what else to do with the canteen closed! I'll save yesterday's stroll in the garden for later today.
PS Hope to find the doors still open when I return.

VA Benefits Guide Available Online
WASHINGTON, May 14, 2002 -- The Department of Veterans Affairs has made its comprehensive benefits guide available for free on the Internet.
Federal Benefits for Veterans and Dependents is a 100-page handbook describing benefits provided by the VA and an overview of programs and services for veterans provided by other federal agencies.
VA officials estimate most of America's 25 million veterans qualify for at least some VA benefits, but many are unaware of their entitlements. This handbook includes a listing of toll-free numbers, World Wide Web information resources, and VA facilities.
Most veterans are eligible for healthcare and burial benefits. Many are also eligible for home loan guarantees, educational assistance, vocational rehabilitation, life insurance, and compensation for service-connected disabilities.
This guide explains how to access many of these benefits online. For instance, it provides a Web address and instructions for enrolling via the Internet into the VA healthcare system. The book describes in detail the priority for care and services available. Separate sections describe specialized services available to Gulf War veterans and those exposed to Agent Orange or radiation.
The Montgomery GI Bill and other education benefits are explained in depth. Burial benefits and employment service are also covered, as are rate charts for the various forms of compensation VA provides.
The book can be purchased through the Government Printing Office for $5 for U.S.-based customers and $6.25 for those overseas by calling toll-free (866) 512-1800. By providing it online, the VA hopes to make the information available to more veterans.

Hey, Amy girl! I just love that "The End" signature. :-)
I know his name isn't on it, but that definitely has "louie" written all over it. So cute! LOL!
I sure hope we don't have to go 'cold turkey' like that again any time soon. That was awful! I feel like I should have used the down time to get something done, but I didn't. I spent all day in Free Dominion and in the Yahoo alternate site waiting for word from Jim about FR. I almost e-mailed you to see if you could go over and find out what was going on. LOL!
(BTW, I haven't forgotten to answer your FM re: the rally and "tailgate". I am going to try to get to that later today.)

I'm a lifetime member of the DAV. I joined after one of their National Service Officers helped me jump through hoops to file a claim for VA disability. But, their services are FREE and you DO NOT have to be a member of DAV or join later for them to assist. It is an awesome organization for disabled veterans.

Since I couldn't get on FR yesterday, I talked to Jim about the rally/tailgate and he will be posting something either today or tomorrow.
I didn't run over to his house but I called him at least 3 times. Twice he said, 'other line .... that might be John' and I got excited until I discovered FR still down. mtngrl called after work to see if I knew what was going on. Had to tell her we were all sitting on pins and needles. LOL

I am so glad you posted that link to Free Dominion. They are such a nice bunch of people and have always welcomed FReepers with open arms. They have even created our own "Guest Room for FReepers". :-)
I wish that more people knew to come there when FR is down. That Yahoo 'alternate site' leaves a lot to be desired. But, since that is where Jim posts updates and messages during down time, we have to monitor that site too.

Hey, Are you finally here in Fl? Still looking forward to meeting you. SK1 T

Yesterday's thread and your posts remind me that I have a couple of boxes of 'treasures' to donate to the local DAV. They are great about putting you on their pickup list and the donations help them to help the vets.

I was talking to WIMom yesterday in Free Dominion and she did exactly the same thing. Her trip to the nursery got REALLY expensive. ($150 worth of perennials? LOL!)

I kept two windows open so I could check the Yahoo site and Free Dominion. Yahoo's thread navigation stinks, imo. FD is more like FR's.
If we ever have to relocate the Canteen, we could start a thread on Free Dominion and appoint someone as the 'designated Yahoo site checker' so not everyone has to bother with it.
What do you guys/gals think about that as a backup plan?

LOL! It had to be done! Seriously, when we moved in, the previous owners had plastic flowers shoved in the ground, the type from the 1960's. I suppose they weather better.
