CBS Airs Part of Pearl Videotape

NEW YORK, May 14, 2002 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- Despite government pleas not to, CBS News on Tuesday aired a portion of a videotape made by captors of slain reporter Daniel Pearl to illustrate how the footage is being used as propaganda.

While CBS said it was careful not to air grisly portions of the video, the late Wall Street Journal reporter's family called the network's decision "heartless" and said it played into terrorists' hands.

The death of Pearl, who disappeared while investigating a story about Islamic militants in Pakistan, was confirmed by a videotape that was delivered to U.S. officials on Feb. 21. The tape reportedly shows Pearl talking, then shows someone cutting his throat while Pearl is unconscious or already dead.

Through a dissident Saudi Arabian journalist, CBS News on Tuesday obtained a copy of a tape being distributed on the Internet that uses images of the video that confirmed Pearl's death, said Jim Murphy, executive producer of the "CBS Evening News."

Network executives extensively debated whether to use it, Murphy said. CBS received calls from Secretary of State Colin Powell's office and the Justice Department urging the network not to air it, he said.

CBS showed the portion where Pearl was forced to say he was Jewish, using less than 30 seconds of the tape.

In an on-air explanation, anchor Dan Rather said the story was aired because CBS News believes it important for Americans to see the impact of the propaganda war being waged against the United States.

Graphic scenes were not aired for taste reasons and out of respect for Pearl's family, he said.

In a statement issued Tuesday night, Pearl's widow, Mariane, and his family, said that while Rather "attempts to rationalize the network's heartless decision to air this despicable terrorist propaganda video, it is beyond our comprehension that any mother, wife, father or sister should have to relive this horrific tragedy and watch their loved one being repeatedly terrorized."

"Terrorists have made this video confident that the American media would broadcast it and thereby serve their exact purpose," the Pearl family said.

The family urged other television networks not to follow suit.

Murphy said he believed it was necessary to show a portion of what is being seen in the Arab world in order to illustrate the story.

"I am not happy about doing the story because I know it upset people," he said. "When I saw the tape, I said to myself, 'these people are doing terrible and dangerous things that could affect me and my family."

He said some government officials who called CBS had heard, incorrectly, that CBS was planning to show the grisly portion of the tape.

"The government called to tell us that what we were doing was helping to spread the terrorists' word and I don't think that's the case," Murphy said. "The word is already being spread. I don't think it's wrong to inform the American people about it."

It's not about news to CBS, it's about ratings.

I watched the CBS clip. Hate to say it, but Rather got it right at the end....it's important for us to see how much they hate us.

I watched it too. I was appalled. I didn't need to see it to know how much they hate us. I know how much they hate us! They killed thousands of us in one fell swoop last September, and then danced around the world. I know how much they hate us. No, Mr. Pearl's family did not need for this to be aired so that Americans "can know how much 'they' hate us." Dan Rather needed this aired so that has could try to add some sort of legitimacy to his celler-dweller of a news program. Didn't work.

Perhaps I should clarify. I watched the clip, but did not concentrate on the Pearl video clips. Too painful. I do not condone playing the video; I am surprised it took so long to surface.

Rather did get the words right. Sincere? Hell no....and while you & I know how much we are hated by the Islamic world, there are a helluva lot of people who still think we can love those muslims to death.

I must express some surprise to hear those words spoken by Mr Biased himself, regardless of his motives.

This conflicts with earlier reports such as UPI: "They said Pearl was still talking to his captors when one of them beheaded him from behind."

I don't watch CBS news, but I fail to see how showing the world the kind of barbarians we are dealing with could be all that bad -- especially if they restrained themselves from showing the most gruesome parts.

As most of us 'get on with our lives' it can't hurt to occasionally be visually reminded why thousands of our military are overseas, and to see the mentality of the enemies they face.

The Pearl tape is not the only piece of "pornography of violent gore" going around the entire islamic world. There is also another one I know of: the video made by the "Bosnian" muslim savage Nasir Oric, showing him and his cutthroats cututing off the heads of innocent Serbian farmers in the region of Srebrenica. The cowardly muslim hyenas would hide in the "UN protected zone" of Srebrenica by day, and would sneak out at night to do their grisly work. This "convenient" arrangement lasted until General Mladic attacked the PHONY "safe zone", sending the terrorists flying for safety. (Oric now runs a club in Tuzla.) The "internationalcommunity" labels Mladic and Karadzic as "war criminals", while the slasher/porno film-star Oric gets off scot-free.

It's my guess that A LOT MORE THAN TWO of these sadistic perversion videos are making the rounds of the islamic world. We Americans need to know the true, satanic extent to which the islamic extremists hate not only us, but also all other Christians and Jews.

Does this mean that RatherBiased is going to change all his telecasts so that his "news"casts are no longer part of the propaganda war being waged against the United States?

Does anyone know how he covered the visit of x39 to Cuba?
