If you had read further, you would have found that this was originally a FOX news story. "The first mention of a mass arrest of Israeli art students on suspicion of involvement in spying was on Fox News on December 12, 2001. The dramatic report stated that around 60 Israelis had been arrested for immigration offenses, but were suspected of spying against the United States, and added that some of those arrested were members of the Israeli military. The report also stated that some of those arrested had failed lie-detector tests."

The original Fox news report was so flawed and filled with inaccuracies they pulled it from the Fox site.

some of those arrested were members of the Israeli military Yeah, they generally draft you into the army at age 17 or 18, and release you at age 20 so you can go to college, but often keep you on as a reservist. I'd be surprised if most students weren't members of the Israeli military.
Here in Los Angeles I have a lot of friends who are French (most of them have no desire ever to return), and all of them served in the French army. Two were in the Diplomatic corps. It's not really a pertinent part of the story to say that the Israelis were members of the military.
