Yeah, they generally draft you into the army at age 17 or 18, and release you at age 20 so you can go to college, but often keep you on as a reservist. I'd be surprised if most students weren't members of the Israeli military.

Here in Los Angeles I have a lot of friends who are French (most of them have no desire ever to return), and all of them served in the French army. Two were in the Diplomatic corps. It's not really a pertinent part of the story to say that the Israelis were members of the military.

When you consider the particular areas of military training most of the "art student's" (who did not even produce the art) had, the notation of their military background is rather "pertinent".
