California lawmakers are at it again: using their legislative powers and the lure of the giant Golden State market to dictate what type of vehicles Detroit should build.

This time, the California Senate is insisting that by 2009, automakers greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cars sold in the state. The bill demands that the California Air Resource Board adopt regulations forcing a "maximum reduction" in carbon dioxide and other gases for all passenger vehicles.

I think the rest of the USA should insist / demand that the good tax payers of the state of Kalifornia foot the bill for the auto companies to accomplish this. The other "sane" states should not be held responsible for KA's delusional behavior.

California state Sen. Debra Bowen said the action by the lawmakers was in response to the failure of the federal government to sign the Kyoto Protocol, an international air quality agreement that would have destroyed the American economy. "California should take the lead when the federal government refuses to do what most Californians support," she says.

The facts in support of my above argument. I rest my case.

I think we should *encourage* Commufornia to enact *ridiculously* restrictive motor vehicle laws. Then the automakers will have to build one type of vehicle to sell in Commufornia, and another to sell on Earth.

The Commufornians will then have to bear the expense of their own stupidity, and the rest of us can have cheap automobiles. But it will only work if Commufornia enacts *really* strict restrictions - a small, incremental difference will only cause the automakers to build the more restrictive model and pass the expense on to the humans as well as the Commufornians.

For years, major automakers have sold California versions of their products which are outfitted with special emissions control equpment. And sold a 49-state version in the rest of the USA. This is nothing new.

The California emissions standards appear to work. The polution has subsided steadily for the last 20 years.
Also, getting your car checked and passed is no big deal.
I'm not saying it should be enacted elsewhere, just that dealing with it first hand is not problematic.
