KIRTLAND, Ohio -- What if a class assignment forced you to choose between getting a passing grade or following your moral values?
NewsChannel5's Kareen Wynter reported that one student decided to fight it, but it almost cost him the school year.
Many students dream of graduating school with high honors, but this student said that he has little to look forward to in his final weeks.
"It's a moral issue I have," he said. "I pay tuition to come to this school. I shouldn't have to defend my moral issues."
A class project in criminal justice turned sour for the college senior, who we'll call Ian.
The assignment was to wear a pink triangle around school for the day as a symbol of gay rights and then write about the experience. Ian confronted his teacher.
"I asked 'What if a student were to feel uncomfortable with this -- would there be an alternate assignment?'" he said. "She said no."
He, in turn, got an F and faced expulsion.
So why wasn't the student offered a backup assignment? Lakeland administrators said that it is part of classroom policy.
"I think if the situation were easy, it wouldn't have been part of the curriculum," said Barbara Grano of Lakeland.
Still, faculty members said that they didn't break the rules.
"Absolutely, this student had an option," she said.
When NewsChannel5 spoke with Ian later in the day, his teacher had given him an apology note that read, in part, that the requirement was waived.
Ian said that he doesn't think things would have been resolved had NewsChannel5 not gotten involved.
"I appreciate everything you've done," he said.
His mother was happy, too.
"I was thrilled," she said. "Here's a young man who stood up for himself, and it worked."
Professors at Lakeland said that there's a list of things you can and can't challenge in the school's handbook.

HE Personally, physically, morally, and emotionally WAS THE SUBJECT OF THE SCHOOL'S DELIBERATE and REPUGNANT DISCRIMATION against HIS PERSONAL OPINIONS and RELIGION.
The school was the one forcing their thoughts and opinions on him. (And their "religion"! The forced absense of morality IS immorality.) on him.....AND HE FOUGHT IT! His fight showed true guts and ACTIONS discrimation.
Not the false advertisment of immorality by wearing your Nazi arband and carrying the flag in Hitler's parade ... just to show the skinheads are discrimated against.
HE was the one facing true discrimation because of his words (actions) ... not the homosexual bullies and thought police.
Well, I certainly smell something here, but I don't look for the ACLU to clean it up.
Like a cross? Wonder if THAT would be considered a provocative symbol of discrimation on that campus?
A symbol of love?
Or a symbol of hatred?
The next assignment is to participate in gay sex and then write about the experience.
As mentioned, If you want to experience hatred and open discrimation on campus .... try a simple cross and a "Vote Republican" or "Gore Lost/Get Over It" button.
So, to uphold his morality, he must give up his morals? If he were willing to do that, he would have just worn the stupid triangle.
Good idea. When challenged, he could've pointed out that modifications were not prohibited and that since he *did* wear it, they would have no grounds to give him a failing grade. Or he could've used those magic words: "On the advice of counsel..." - bet that would've given them pause.
My first inclination, though, would've been to wear it and the entire time, stay in "Ace Ventura" character. You know... the "talking out of my @ss" skit. Simple, crude, offensive humor. Oops... my troublemaking past is peeking out. ;-)
Here ends your English lesson.
With assignments like this one it sounds like that school would consider anal intercourse "finals".
A Star of David would be a good one about now.
Especially in Europe.
Yikes!! I would think that you'd want to hide all the rakes and such.
I had a little "practical" joke played on me once that almost resulted in a fight with a couple of good-sized electrical linemen. Lets just say that this friend thought it was funny to tarnish my reputation. Needless to say, the "jokester" and I had a little talk the next time I saw him.
