If Bush had made a statement to that effect, he would have come off as an utter fool.

Arafat controls Hamas by his refusal to stop, and his obvious approval of attacks by Hamas while sitting there claiming to be the President of Palestine and the ONLY one on the planet who can sign a peace deal for them.

I'm not going to type a goddamn essay on the political state of the Palestinian people. Arafat controls the PLO, Hamas is independent of PLO control. The PLO developed in the West Bank, Hamas developed in Lebanon. Arafat and Hamas have been at odds before and their soldiers have clashed in the past. When Arafat wants to send a suicide bomber he uses the Al-Asquah(sp?)Martyr's brigade, not Hamas.

Good question. I assume that Israel (and our own country) believes that by making peace with the group that represents the majority of Palestinians the radicals will be left high and dry. Sort of like what happened to the Real IRA in N. Ireland after the majority of the IRA laid down their arms.
