Rather than registering child support debtors, everyone taking a new job would be registered. This strategy eventually shifted to registration of everyone with a job, a social security number, a driver's license, a bank account, a telephone; anyone for which there is a source of information.

Give 'em a phony SS number when you get a new job (transpose two digits so it looks like a typo). After a month or two, when your profile has been sent to the national registry, tell your employer you noticed that your SS number is mistyped and should be corrected.

Fait accompli. And America was supposed to be different.

Actually, the only thing in freedom's favor is government inefficiency. Anyone who has dealt with the Feds--including illegals and terrorists--knows they lose data, misplace files, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing, et cetera.

The hard question for freedom-loving Americans is, do you want your government to be more efficient? Tough call.

People are incredibly naive.

We already have telephones that can be opened for listening with four mics in them (Telephonic ringer, headphone, mouthpiece, and the area mic.)

Everytime you use a plastic grocery card or any credit card you "locate"yourself.

The latest law is that all calls must be locatabkle withing the nearest 150 feet.

We are already cattle, so why worry about "becoming" cattle.

Moooo....

The primary contractor for the database system was Andersen Consulting. The company broke from international financial services consulting firm Arthur Andersen, Andersen Worldwide this year and was renamed Accenture Ltd. Accenture is based in Bermuda, a well-known offshore tax and privacy haven.

Somehow, this seems appropriate.

True. However, I hope you don't plan to work, bank, drive or purchase anything because you'll need that mag strip or chip to do them...

Can I get mine tatooed on my forearm, or forehead, so that I could not buy nor sell without the number?

With this new card, it will soon replace cash money. This card isn't about security, it's about redistribution of wealth. It's about controlling your money, and your life. One slip up, and some unseen government official can stop you from driving a car, using your hard earned money, and keep you from going anywhere. Now this is okay if you're a criminal, but what if you're a person on Free Republic who writes something that is not government friendly? What if one of their monitors, sees something they don't like and all of a sudden you're broke, and unable to drive anywhere? What if you're wrongly accused and convicted of a crime, and they freeze your money? What if you die, and your spouse who survives you gets half of everything taken out of your bank account, just because you've died, and the death tax needs to be paid? You see, there's a lot of potential impropriety.

I don't trust ANY official to do anything in my best interest. This card will be misused. This card is about monitoring and controlling your life. It's a way to generate revenue for the government, and a way for big business to track your credit and purchases. This is too much power for ANYONE. No government by the people for the people would ever put forth legislation that could possibly be misused, or used for evil purposes. This is Larry Ellison's way of ensuring his Oracle Stock stays High, and how he gets to vicariously control America for the next 50 years.

If it's too late to stop this ID, then there should be an immediate provision that it only be given to IMMIGRANTS. Lawful citizens do NOT need the scrutiny, however Immigrants, legal or illegal do.

If it is too late to stop National ID, the word that comes to mind isn't immigrants, it's EMMIGRANTS.

Lots of people came to this country seeking freedom, so too will they leave in pursuit of it.

There is a downside to the government's inefficiency. If some clerk somewhere accidentally mishandles your data, you may find that you are "deceased," or that you never existed at all. Suddenly, you cannot cash a check, use a credit card, get a job, or travel abroad. Only after considerable time, effort, and expense are you able to correct the error. And of course, you will not be permitted to sue the government for damages.

Too Late to Stop National ID

Isn't the whole point of fora such as FR to undo what would otherwise be "too late"? Yeah, it's too late, if you assume that we have to keep playing this stupid game every two and four years of letting the insiders choose our candidates for us and then pretend that we're exercising such free-thinking autonomy by dutifully picking which of their two stooges that we want. And then we act surprised when things continue to slide away from us?

I'm directing this comment to those who consistently argue that we have to "compromise" and keep sticking with the GOP no matter what they do. I want to hear from you. What say ye now?

Four billion dollars is a lot of money.

The author forgets that this is government we're talking about. They've got to pay for the extra benefits, diversity training, etc, etc.... Government $ just don't go quite as far.

There will come a day when conscious humans will realize they do not need external authorities (such as governments) to rule and control their daily lives in order to make them "do good", and "behave"...

Conscious humans will realize that forced backed external authorities are THE PROBLEM, not the solution...

Conscious humans will realize that those that produce values (individuals/businesses) are much more valuble to society than those that destroy values (governments)...

Conscious humans will then reduce government to the size necessary to perform government's only legimate reason to exist at all...

To protect the rights of the individual...

Humans will then understand that consciousness is the most powerful force in the Universe...

That consciousness is killed when it is bound by chains of force and control...

All forms of socialsm/liberalism will cease to exist on planet earth...

Only then will true freedom exist for consciousness...

No national ID necessary...
