Pilots with guns scare ABCs Cokie Roberts because airplanes is one of the few places I feel safe from guns. Having some pilot whos gone off his nut for some reason running around with a gun does not make me feel safe. This Week co-host Sam Donaldson stood with Roberts against guns, even when pressed by George Will about whether he wished the pilots had guns on September 11th.
During the roundtable segment on the May 5 This Week with, for now, Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts, Donaldson raised how commercial airline pilots have signed a petition to allow them to carry guns in the cockpit.
The prospect horrified Roberts, who denounced the idea: I dont feel safer. Airplanes is one of the few places I feel safe from guns. Having some pilot whos gone off his nut for some reason running around with a gun does not make me feel safe. George Stephanopoulos, the future solo host of the program, pointed out: Thats always a danger. That person is always in control of the plane and could fly it into the ground if he wants to...
George Will quipped: It is the case, I think, that support for pilots being armed increases as people have more and more experience with so-called airport security.
Will soon asked Donaldson: Do you or do you not wish the pilots on September 11th had been armed? Yes or no Sam. Donaldson: Well I wish that somebody- Will: Thats not a yes or a no. Donaldson: Well, when I asked Secretary Powell for a yes or a no question we heard two or three minutes and I and Im happy to do it. Will: The prosecution rests. Roberts interjected: Suppose the hijackers had pulled the gun out of the pilots hand if the pilot had a gun? Donaldson came to Roberts side: I dont know whether it would have made any difference. If it could have made a difference of course you would want it to happen. But I think, in the long run, guns in the cockpit are not a good idea. I join Cokie.

Somehow I just can't see our ancestors arguing over whether or not the stagecoach drivers should be allowed to carry guns.

Very nice. You have captured the idea that armed pilots are just a line in the sand for the liberal thought control machine. If guns are OK in the cockpit, might they also be OK in the hands of citizens to defend themselves, their homes and their loved ones? Don't even think about it. It's just like trying to ban partial birth abortions -- there is no possible compromise in the liberal manifesto. Relax. Sam and Cokie will tell you what's best for you.

Well guess what Kookie, biased, brainless political talk show hosts are more dangerous. Look in a mirror, you'll see something really scary.

Or the pilot could just find a nearby skyscraper.
Didn't 9/11 teach the elites of the Northeast anything?

Yeah, those pilots going beserk with a gun are a clear and present threat. They might injure a terrorist. Only commercial pilot I heard of who went beserk was the Egyptian co-pilot who took down an airliner off Long Island (FAA's conclusion supported by ample evidence but still denied by Egyptian officals).

I would trust both Cokie and Donaldson, along with Dan Blather among others, with sharp pointy cosmetologist scissors. As long as they run with them very qickly in places likely to cause them to trip.

How does someone like Cokie get a high paying job sharing her IQ with with Sammy, another overpaid fixture. Add up any commonsense the two have and the sum is zero.

Ideally, airline check-in would go something like this:
Attractive Check-in clerk (C):"Good Morning Sir/Ma'am, I see that you are (in the military/ a law enforcement officer/ a CCW permit holder/ etc.). Do you have a copy of your current handgun certification?"
Traveler (T):"Why, yes I do." Hands over his OCC scorecard.
(C):"Wow, I'm only in the 2600 Club myself. Will you be carrying your own weapon this morning?"
(T):"Unfortunately not, I'm returning from Europe."
(C):Shudders "Ugh, those horrid socialists. Well, Mr. Smith, welcome back to civilization. As you know, our policy, like that of all US domestivc air carriers is that qualified citizens go armed while aboard our flights. Here is your Federalist Airlines issue Kimber Custom II with complimentary paddle holster. The weapon is at condition two, loaded with safety slugs, and has an internal guide rod laser sight. The on/off switch is here. Just sign right here for serial number Xx1234567890. Thank you. Have a safe flight and thank you for flying with us today."
(T):"Thank you miss. Good luck on breaking 2650. It is good to be home."
(C):"Next, please."

Cokie must live a very sheltered life.
Where I work, we have a credit union with an ATM. Nearly once a week I pass the armored car and the guard carrying cash and a gun. If he "went off his nut" and started shooting people, he could probably claim one person for every round of ammunition, since my employer has created a disarmed victim zone.

You know, I am beginning to wonder if every so called journalist is smoking something, or shooting up, or has become what the new agers call a walk in.

Does the name "EgyptAir" ring a bell? They had a Muslim pilot who committed suicide and killed all the passengers on board by slamming his plane into the Atlantic a while ago. He did not need a gun to do that!

Every once in awhile I NEED one of these articles to come along.
I sit here at my computer, shaking my head at the world and The Thought begins. "Maybe everyone else is normal, and YOU, Dianna are an idiot."
And then I read an article like this and my faith in myself is restored.
