I received the following email today, did you?

NOTE: This email contains information about your PhotoPoint account:

Account Name: XXXXXXXXXX
Account Password: XXXXXX

This is a one time email, and you will not be put on any mailing lists.

As of December 14th, 2001, Pantellic Software, creators, owners, and operators of PhotoPoint.com were forced to cease operations due to financial reasons. PhotoPoint Corp USA similarly entered Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors in July of 2001.

There are currently no plans to bring PhotoPoint.com back online, although we are always interested in discussions from interested business partners for doing so.

CD Ordering Now Available ------------------------- Due to the demand, as a means for members to get copies of their photos, we have arranged for them to be able to purchase CD's of their PhotoPoint accounts. As Pantellic is insolvent, this is being done by a third party.

This offer a short term offer, and will only be extended until May 31st, 2002. All orders must be placed by this time (and payment received by June 15th at the latest). The cost of a CD is $24.95 USD plus $9.95 USD shipping and handling, and includes all of your photos, captions, and guestbook entries. (This is half the price of archive CD's avaialble from other photo sharing sites.)

CD's may be ordered by visiting http://www.photopoint.com

Your account information is as follows: Account Name: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX Account Password: XXXXXXXXX Number of Photos: 320 Size of Account: 12733 K

You may go directly to ordering a CD for your "XXXXXXXX@XXXXXX" account by going to this link:

http://cd.photopoint.com/perl/order.pl?email=XXXXXX@XXXXXX com&password=XXXXXXX&step=2

If this link does not work for you, just visit http://www.photopoint.com and follow directions for ordering the CD, and enter your email address and password above when prompted.

We appreciate your patience and understanding, and hope that this option is useful to people who may have neglected to keep their original copies.

Comments overhaerd from a loyal PhotoPoint customer: "Why, yes!
As a matter of fact, I **do** use PhotoPoint to host my online images.
Why do you ask?"

Imagine, paying to have someone use their storage to store your pictures. Un-American.

They charged people for storage, people paid, then they went out of business. Their customers were stiffed and now they have to pay again for a CD of their own pictures.

At least you got an e-mail. They never contacted me about my photos. Luckily I was wise enought to back up all my photos on CD's anyway.

If you haven't invested in a CD burner, I highly recomend you do so now. They're not gonna get any cheaper than they are.

My guess is that they're providing this option just in case anyone had any material which they'd uploaded to the site and of which they had no other copy. I don't think anyone is planning on making any real money here, since few people have been unfortunate enough to have the only copy of their pictures on Photopoint. I don't know how many customers photopoint had, but I wouldn't be surprised if the number of customers taking them up on the offer is between 1 and 100. I don't know how much it costs to run those oodles-of-gigs servers, but if 100 people accept Photopoint's offer, that's $3500; if only 10 people do, that's $350.

Presumably, anyone who does accept Photopoint's offer will prefer payment of $35 to the irretrievable loss of the pictures. While it's possible if not likely that the third-party handling the CD mailing will turn some profit, I think this action is motivated more by a desire to avoid totally hosing anyone who was relying on having their pictures stored than a desire to make big money.

There's a wealth of information about this stuff at Hotwire's(Wired Magazine) Webmonkey in the how-to library. Here is a direct link to FTPing with CuteFTP, you need CuteFTP or something similar to upload your files to your ISP's server. I've found this to be much more dependable than PhotoPoint. Not that I've ever actually used PhotoPoint, but I've sure seen their logo enough times when their customers files won't load into a page.

And visit your ISP's homepage for info on how to activate your FREE personal web space. You'll be glad you did.

P.S. Hotwire's got the best HTML Cheatsheet!
