You may be thinking of a different, more recent monk, one I'm not aware of. The person I'm talking about, Brother Daniel (ne Oswald Rufeisen), lost his case, in 1962. The Chief Rabbi of Israel, who was consulted about the case but held no power, actually ruled in his favorBrother Daniel was indeed halakhically Jewishbut the Supreme Court ruled against him.
That is only a manmade rule, created to serve a political need. Jesus lineage is patrilineal (See Matthew 1.)
That's quite an understatement! Much like what Schlieman found when he went in search of Troy.
Try doing research on any subject where "all the answers are known", like about the Lost Tribes of Israel, and see how much support you get. Virtually none from established, entrenched, and timid clergy. Very little from "scholars" who are too lazy to redo their lecture notes, and outright hostility from vested interests that don't want their boats rocked. Whole empires are based on faulty but established "known answers".
Fortunately, I got some good support when I attended Oxford; from a lone Jewish Professor, but not from the Protestant ones. Some of the results are reflected in my Profile.
>For instance if there really was maternal transmission of jewishness solely, there would be a tribe named after Jacob's daughter Dinah.
Excellent! I missed this earlier.
Would you consider them Jews?
They are Jewish according to halachah (Jewish law). Should they at some future time decide to become Jewish, they would technically not have to go through a formal conversion. However, if they practice Christianity, and identify as Christians so practically speaking, they are not Jews.
This reminds me of the "Black Confederates" that frequently are mentioned in Civil War discussions. There were many Blacks (slaves and free men) who held non-combat support positions in the Confederate Army. But there were also some slave-owning "FMOC" (Free Men of Color) who became soldiers, passing as white. The FMOC had 1/16 Black ancestry and there according to the Louisiana "Black Code" were to be considered "Black" although they looked white and considered themselves socially superior to Blacks.
In the early 1900s the United Confederate Veterans tried to raise money for the 40 acres and a mule since, in not American, it was the Confederate thing to do.
"None will deny that our servants are more worthy of respect than the motley hordes which come against us. Bad faith [to black Confederates] must be avoided as an indelible dishonor."
Richmond Sentinel, Mar 24, 1864.
Robert E.Lee, maybe, but maybe just the correspondent.
IMO, this "Jewish Nazi" stuff, those who wish to define people's rights by the belief's of an unknown grandparent (even though he may have had a "lost" contributation to make) takes us to places that are alien to American culture.

Ahhhuuummmm, I reviewed the site you mentioned and find little there but sweaty ranting and feverish shouting. If you had something Biblical or Archeological references to go on I would be happy to discuss the topic with you.
Meanwhile, please Click on my Profile and read the 3-MINUTE History to see what really went on, and find out who is who.
