"The monk won the case, I believe."

You may be thinking of a different, more recent monk, one I'm not aware of. The person I'm talking about, Brother Daniel (ne Oswald Rufeisen), lost his case, in 1962. The Chief Rabbi of Israel, who was consulted about the case but held no power, actually ruled in his favor—Brother Daniel was indeed halakhically Jewish—but the Supreme Court ruled against him.
