My score for this morning was 92 standing, 98 3X rapid sitting, 95 rapid prone, and 183 1X in slow prone. The score was 468 and I tossed one into the 6 ring in the slow prone to lose the Master rating. I missed by 2 points. I definitly know how to lose a Master rating. I used to watch these great shooters agonize over one shot and now I know why.

Nice shooting! I take it the weather was good. I'm only 10 shots (bulls) behind you ;') I think the higher you get, the smaller the gains made are. The first time I shot I scored 170, then next time 250, then 290. After that I was in the low 300's for 5-6 matches before I broke 350. I think within the next 3 matches I'll break 400. I am fortunate to have a gun club that sponsers an HP NM every month. Cheap too, just ten bucks. A lot of the guys at my range go to the national events at Perry and Quantico, so they come here to stay in practice.

Does your range have the full deal (600yds), or do you have the 100yd like I do. I'm wondering how many clicks up to go when shooting 600yds.

The weather was at 23 MPH wind gusts but the temperature was fine. It was in the 80's. Luckily the gusts were from behind and we shoot North like a good range should be layed out. We have 100 and 200 yards. The testosterone group is on the 200 but I like the 100 because my spotter scope won't let me see the .223 holes. I've shot at 600 before and I like it better than what I'm doing now. It's just that it's so far to drive.

I've been kicking myself all day for hitting that 6. That was the only one and I didn't even hit any 7's.

My son's M1A has 5 clicks to 200, 8 to 300 and 21 to 600 yards. Those should all be counted from the bottom if I remember correctly. That should get you on.

Shot another NM style pistol match today, I shot a little bit better than our match.

The surprising thing was that only six people showed up to shoot. I guess Mothers Day and rain held down the attendance. I owe my win to the practice gained during the postal match. Next up is a highpower rifle match in June and a reactive pistol math in July.

First Freeper Rifle Postal Match

OK folks, lets do it. I have 15 set of 6 targets. We will do centerfire and rimfire rifles, 100 yards, 10 shots each; all slow fire, standing, sitting and prone. Iron sights, no spotting scopes or shooting jackets.

Freep-mail me a mailing address. I'll post an open announcement thread on FR's main board after I have gotten responses from the postal pistol match participants first.

M1911 and myself are in, leaving 13 slotes open.

Sorry-Can't participate in the rifle. Thanks for the offer, but I don't have one of the rifles available and I would truly embarass myself on it if I did. Been focusing on handguns so long my minimal rifle skills have suffered

...no match rifles or match ammo?

What constitutes "match" rifes and ammo? Service rifles, but no "space" guns? Ball ammo?

My Match Service Rifle Ar-15 weighs around 14 pounds and it looks like the 7 pound wonder that I carried in Basic Training. Match rifles can be categorized as any rifle that has a replacement heavy match barrel. I'm hoping that we can make this a match where everyone can participate without going to extremes with the equipment. I'm going to shoot this match with the '03A3 that was ordered a couple of weeks ago that still hasn't arrived. Unless there is a problem with the mechanics of it, I may switch to a $140 Yugo 98K.

As far as the ammo is concerned, I'm not going to shoot the match with Sierra MatchKings or the stuff that says "MATCH" in great big letters. I have boxes of surplus 30-06 or Turkish 8mm.

I realize that this isn't what I did for the pistol match. I just thought that most people owned accurate pistols since they don't cost any more than a reliable defensive pistol. The problem that I see with rifles is that the price item isn't the same. Anyone can buy a good hunting rifle for a couple of hundred dollars. A good match rifle's barrel will run more than that.

Sorry, I couldnt connect yesterday...

I think you forgot to mention no match rifles or match ammo?
Correct, no match rifles or ammo.

No spotting scopes - or no optics on the gun?
correct, neither.

What constitutes "match" rifes and ammo? Service rifles, but no "space" guns? Ball ammo?
I'm sure there is a techincal definition for these, Shooter 2.5, can you help me out?

From my point of view, match ammo is that stuff that costs $20+ a box and says "match". I shoot m2 LakeCity ball, from the CMP, $88 (+ S&H) a case of 400, but I'd like to let shooter 2.5 give us a better definition. I've got 6 address so far. I'll wait till this sunday night then post an open thread on the main board.

Shooter, you answered my questions as I composed my last post.

I think if someone has a match gun, they know it! ;^). I recently acquired a 1911 .45, the barrel and barrel bushing are marked "NM" (national match), and the barrel has been lapped to the slide.

I wish I had had this gun for our pistol match, a tighter group I have never seen.

I think we can leave the description to Ball, Full Metal Jacket or all lead bullets. There may be some hunting rifles that take nothing but lead. Someone may have decided to use grand daddy's old trapdoor so we don't want to leave them out. By the way, that actually happened at one of our matches. We had match service rifles and this guy came out with a 45-70 trapdoor because that's all he had. It gave him the chance to get the CMP Garand.

Match rifles could be defined as anything with a heavy match barrel. I'm still wondering if we should restrict the sights even more but I'm inclined to forget about it. I don't think too many people have a standard barrel on something and then went all out for a $300 set of sights. So I think we can just mention the barrel. Iron sights only it is.

OK, to make it easy. See all this trash in the picture? We can't use any of it. LOL.
That's all the stuff I have to drag out Sunday. That upper receiver is not the one I use for the matches where I'm 2 points away from Master. At that club, I use the service rifle category. For some reason, I have only seen one match rifle at that other club. At this particlular club, at least half the people use them. So that's why I drag out that long upper receiver.
