IMHO

The Catholic hierarchy is no different from American politicians .
They both grave power and prestige that's why they are in the professions they are

The American politicians take an oath to defend the constitution a document they could care less about and an oath that means nothing to them

In a similar fashion I doubt the bishops and cardinals really believe the basic tenets of their religion and have branched off into socialistic concerns
I doubt most believe in the reality of the eucharist , confirmation, immaculate conception etc etc
I am not commmenting on whether these beliefs are true or not but they are part of their religion and I doubt they believe them

Your assessment is really heartbreaking. Are you a Catholic? I believe that most if not all the bishops believe in the Eucharist.

In all this posting and talking about sexual morality not one word of mention concerning the use of artificial means of birth control. The widespread acceptance of this is perhaps the biggest scandal of all. The laity will rant and rave about a few priests and not a word about this most serious mortal sin. Wives take pills (abortifacients), husbands have vasectomies and use condoms, wives have their tubes tied. So long as people are posting concerning the necessity of returning to Catholic orthodoxy and sexual morality lets make sure we cover the whole gamut!!

Amen, amen, and Amen!!!

Humanae Vitae ping!!!

(As usual, sorry for redundant pings, and if you would like on or off the ping list, please let me know...)

Put me on the ping list, doc.

Humanae Vitae is ignored by most Catholics, and it will take more than a proscription or another encyclical from Rome to engage most Catholic couples today.

Hammers ain't gonna work. Let's figure out another way to work with Catholic couples who want children but who are not going to take temperatures or accept that every act of sexual intercourse must be open to children.

"When Islam attacks here - which it will - most Catholics will have so little knowledge of and trust in their own religion that they'll probably just give up without a fight. Nobody's going to want to get martyred for a picture of a butterfly and a rainbow (current church banner)."

Livius, you hit the nail RIGHT SQUARE on the head. Most American Catholics are totally ignorant of their faith. They go to mass and communion, but they NEVER go to confession, never pray the rosary, have no devotions of any kind, probably don't even have a crucifix in their home. There is nothing external that separates their lives from their Protestant neighbors'.

Their CCD teachers didn't have any better grasp of the reality of the Faith than THEY do. None of them own a copy of the CCC, let alone READ it.

Many priests are afraid to TEACH from the pulpit for fear of alienating their congregations, but I have YET to see a single walkout from a homily by my own pastor, even though he teaches forcefully about sin and evil. We visited at a different parish last night, and got a wonderful sermon on the Real Presence. "It's all right there in the first part of the Creed," Father said. "You profess it every week. But if you doubt it, or if you don't believe in it, then don't you dare come up to Communion!" Would that we had more pastors who knew how to TEACH from the pulpit. (A Spiritual Work of Mercy, incidentally...)

If the majority of bishops, priests and deacons were delivering the correct and orthodox teaching about sexual morality, there would be fewer Catholics committing the sin of contraception, sex outside of marriage, masterbation etc. etc.
