Grand jury indicts woman in windshield death

The Fort Worth woman accused of hitting a pedestrian and allowing him to die while stuck in her windshield was indicted for murder Thursday.

Chante J. Mallard, 25, could face a maximum sentence of life in prison for the death of Gregory Glenn Biggs, 37.

Ms. Mallard was being held Thursday in the Tarrant County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail. She could not be reached for comment.

Mike Heiskell, Ms. Mallard's attorney, said he couldn't comment because of the gag order issued in the case by 371st District Judge James Wilson.

"I am going to follow that," Mr. Heiskell said.

Before the gag order, Mr. Heiskell said the accusations against his client had been blown out of proportion.

Police said Ms. Mallard struck Mr. Biggs with her car on the highway late one night in October 2001. She drove home with Mr. Biggs entangled in her windshield and parked the car in her garage, police said.

Mr. Biggs' death remained a mystery until an informant came forward about four months later.

The Tarrant County medical examiner has said that Mr. Biggs died within hours inside the garage. Police initially said he suffered for days.

A Tarrant County grand jury indicted Ms. Mallard for murder because she not only failed to stop and render aid, but also kept anyone else from possibly saving Mr. Biggs' life. The indictment uses the term "kidnapping."

In a second count, Ms. Mallard is also charged with tampering with evidence. Her bloody car seat was removed and burned before police could examine it. Grand jurors also found that Ms. Mallard used her car as a deadly weapon.

After Mr. Biggs died, Ms. Mallard and at least one friend dumped his body in a nearby park, where he was found in late October, police said. Ms. Mallard was arrested in February.

Thanks for the ping, Ming! I was wondering about this case. Glad to see she's being indicted for murder and that the word "kidnapping" was being used. You may not remember, but we had briefly discussed this some time ago (and you mentioned someone else had also discussed this concept with you). I haven't been in FR much at all the past month.....when I have more time, "I'll be back." Thanks for the update.

Let me under stand this--the guy is hanging in her windshield, clearly stuck beyond any hope of getting out by himself, and bleeding. She hides him in her garage while she boinks with her boyfriend.

Well...in a nutshell...yeah.

Imaging the outrage this story would have provoked if a white man murdered a black woman in this manner.

That's easy. Kommie Katie and Matt "I'm queer for Bryant" Lair on "The Toady Show" would do several shows on it,and there would be a tv movie made about it.

While the kidnapping is pretty clear, it is not as clear whether she intentionally or knowingly caused the death

Looks like it's chrystal-clear to me. ANYBODY knows if you deny medical care to somebody seriously injured and bleeding that they will die,and her kidnapping kept him prisoner in her locked garage until he died. All she and her boyfriend would have had to do was cover his eyes so he wouldn't be able to see where he was leaving from, and then take him somewhere like a bus stop near a hospital, and drop him off while they called 911 from a pay phone to report he was there. He would be alive today, and she wouldn't be facing murder charges.

It will be an interesting question whether an aggravated case of failure to render aid is the legal equivalent of kidnapping.

It IS a case of kidnapping, since they kept him locked in her garage until he died. According to her own words,he begged for help and she denied it to him. It is safe to assume a man begging for help would have tried to get somebody else to help him if he had not been locked inside her garage. This means she kidnapped him because she was holding him against his will.

BTW,I want to know why no mention has been made of the boyfriend who she took out to the garage to show him her new hood ornament when she got home that night, and who she went to have sex with before coming back to see if he was still alive. Seems to me this boyfriend should be charged with kidnapping and murder, also.
