...you still haven't given me one reason I should consider the French a friend to America....

I never said you have to like 'em.

I'm saying, you don't have to hate 'em.

What many do not know is that Napoleon was the first to write the civil code of procedure.

Evidently even fewer know that the Code Napoleon was based on and a revival of the Code of Justinian the Great, written in the Corpus Juris Civilis -- the body of civil law compiled in the 6th Century AD.

..if you choose to ignore it, that does not mean it does not exist...

I didn't ignore it, I disproved it, with a well-documented example.

As to you and your 'AK-47s', just cut the crap, okay?

Also If it wasnt for the french way back in the day we might not have beaten the English for our independence. Read the history books or watch the patriot

I agree. See my post (#42).

My middle name is 'logic', Milburn.

Now look. You said :

...the French resistance was pretty ineffectual and its size largely mythological...

and I posted a link stating :

...No sector gave the Reich more cause for fury than Nancy’s – the Auvergne, the Fortress of France. Methodically the SS laid its plans and prepared to obliterate the group, whose stronghold was the plateau above Chaudes-Aiguwes. Troops were massed in towns all around the plateau, with artillery, mortars, aircraft and mobile guns. In June 1944 22,000 SS troops made their move on the 7,000 Maquis. Through bitter battle and escape, Nancy and her army had cause to be satisfied: 1,400 German troops lay dead on the plateau, 100 of their own men...

Now tell me, Mr. Logic 101 : how is tying down 22,000 SS, and killing 1,400 of them 'ineffectual'? No sophistry or spin, now; just answer the question asked, please.

Good for your family. I hope they have a better sense of humour than you do.

You are right. There was alot of French collaboration, but as you pointed out that there were alot of resistors as well. You would probably know the French term used to describe those who collaborated or just were non-committal but claimed they were resisitance or whatever after the Germans left. It translates to "Marquis, post war".

We just had a Clausewitz post yesterday with his opinion of the French, and it was highly complementary. The lesson of history is that as a nation actually becomes civilized, it loses it's interest in human butchery. We just haven't quite got there yet, though we unquestionably have come a long way in the last 50 years.

I am not quite sure about the nature of your post. The US is the most advanced nation in the history of humankind.

..that's pretty thin gruel...

Fourteen hundred dead Nazis is hardly 'thin gruel', Milburn.

This conversation has come to a close. You clearly have some kind of baggage about the French that makes you unable to give credit where credit is due. My parting suggestion to you is to keep in mind that, by your own admission, your family bolted, and were sitting safe and snug in the US, while the Maquis were battling the Nazis. Any judgement you offer on French military valour should be preceded with an acknowledgement that your family sat the Big One out.

..listen d$ckhead...

Oh.

You're offended, by slurs on your family's military record?

After making a dozen posts, slandering the records of countless French families?

Hypocrite.

Just saw your post because I've been on vacation in--you guessed it--France, actually, Paris.

Have had some hard feelings about the French in the past, but was treated so very well and so impressed with Paris, can't get too into the thread. Besides, they're getting sick of going left and high taxes, etc. that they may move center. We'll see.

I hate to get into a slanging match.

But why do you hate the French so much?

For if you hate the French so much, I hate YOU!
