George Lucas to TIME: "All democracies turn into dictatorships..."

Mature societies tend to oscillate slowly between the imperial and baronial forms of government. One of the barons will gain power over the others, usually with popular support, and form a line of emperors. The problems with succession planning eventually cause the line to dissapate and power to flow back to the barons.

Democracy is an anomaly, and it requires either a low population density, plentiful resource environment (e.g. the US) or a catastrophe which disrupts the old power structures (e.g. WW I and II).

Mr. Lucas is a revisionist..... Word on the street is that he's re-editing the orginal trilogy with newly filmed footage so it will meld with Episodes 1-3. And note that the PHANTOM MENACE DVD is different from the one that played in movie theatres. I never cared much for revisionists.

I have had suspicions about this, but I can't remember any changed scenes, and usually when people do this I can remember what was taken out. What was changed?

I believe it was the philosopher Plato who wrote, "Republics decline into democracies and democracies into dictatorships."

That having been said, I enjoyed The Phantom Menace, even Jar-Jar, and from the trailers of the new one, it appears that I shall enjoy that one also.

Somewhat better turns of phrase than Lucas, but then what did we expect?

Actually it was a retelling of the story of King Arthur. Obi-Wan is Merlin, Luke is the young king Arthur, and the light-saber is Excalibur.

After Star Wars, the makers of the excreable Excalibur went to lengths to point this out, even making the knights' helmets look like Darth Vader, and the moves Arthur makes with the sword are identical to those performed by "Luke".

BTW, Forbidden Planet is based on Shakespeare's Tempest, while The Day the Earth Stood Still is a retelling of the Passion of Christ.

Lucas isn't the most subtle guy in the world and the Nazi angle was fairly obvious from ANH. He's included some elements from ancient Rome as well (chariot races, slavery and I think there's something akin to a gladiator fight in this one). I enjoy historical references in sci-fi, but I'm not at all looking to Lucas for historical or political insight -- even if he were a political ally.

It's sort of a false version of history to imply that Rome elected Ceasar and that was it. First of all, a very corrupt Senate elected the Emperor so Ceasar was elected in a derivative fashion out of fear because the army was loyal to him. He was not truly elected by the people.

I also believe Rome survived for hundreds of years after Caesar's murder and prospered greatly. I don't know how any analogy of Rome would relate to America. It was totally different.

I suppose there are a few lessons from Rome we could apply, but again America is very different from what Rome once was.

Sorry I didn't ping you, this is your kind of thread. I'm looking forward to the film. Sometime a few weeks after it's been released, I'll make the trek to Cleveland to see it the way it was meant to be seen -- in digital.

Sometimes I hate Pittsburgh so much . . .

Disagree with you there... Most filmmakers today aren't into digital filming and GL is leading the pack. His ILM and Skywalker Sound are the best in Hollywood. In relation to Animation, he first owned Pixar, considered topdog, but still owns some of it and does major work for their releases.

Well there isn't many in Phoenix either so I'm not going to bother. However, I've already planned to use a vacation day on 5/21 and book three showings in a row.

Its going to be much more of an adult movie and it does appear, if you believe the spoilers, GL is listening to his fans.
