Even though borehole data has been available for awhile, this is an important publication because of the use of data from six continents.

Very convenient that they have limited their study to the past 500 years bp. That would put them in the era of "the little ice age", a period of extreme cold, recorded in the historic record as well as through scientific observaton. However, 1000 years ago, the climate was apparently even warmer than it is today. Similar warm episode are indicated going back through the Pleistocene. Funny, I don't recall any SUV's from that epoch.

The earth is a geothermic battery that stores heat during the day and releases it at night. Now seeing how gyisers (sic) and volcanos also release heat from underground, this study is a load of crap to me. Why haven't cave tempratures risen?

lol...I saw "Borehole" and immediatly assumed someone had come up with a new and creative name for Al Gore:
Gore the boring a-hole = Borehole.
I can't believe my mind made that connection without even thinking about it-----I've been FReeping for too long.

How did they determine the benchmark (average regional climate) temperature for comparision?

A surface rock temperature increase combined with a surface air increase and negligible atmospheric increase would tend to support Dr Sallie Baliunas' theory of solar radiation influence, rather than the Greenhouse effect.

We should immediately begin research into how to stabilize the sun's long-term cycles.

Excellent post!!! IMHO the cause of global warming is a natural phenomenon, and at least partially derived from the natural stellar changes the Sun is going through as it ages. I wouldn't say that the Sun is the only causative agent but the last several years of monitoring the Sun and it's effects on the Earth have convinced me that there is a direct cause/effect relationship between the two, the depth of which I had the job to determine.

One essential part of any kind of quantitative science is the inclusion of an estimate of the error in the results. In reports of computational results on so-called "global warming" I have yet to see the inclusion of such estimates.
In reconstructing a surface temperature or surface heat content history from bore-hole data, it would seem high precision would be quite difficult, the more so the farther back in time one is going. For example, high precision would seem to require a though knowledge of heat capacity and heat conductivity of the bore material. These could not be expected to be constant, but would likely vary with depth. Relevant partial differential equations would have to be solved approximately. The process of collecting data itself would introduce inaccuracies; boring would create heat, and once the core was removed, convection would modify the temperature profile. All of these factors would contribute to errors in the final result.
I don't pretend to be an expect in the particular branch of science involved here, not by any means. But I do have some general knowledge of the methods involved.

"Over the past 50 years...." I can guarantee that the planet is 'cooler' than when the dinosaurs roamed, and that I will be cooler when I assume 'room temperature'. 'Global warming' over time is illogical unless we assume no God and that we are being drawn into the sun, which requires a different form of FAITH than I have.

In a related news story, scientists are preparing to release their findings from the following studies:
- Is 'domestic violence' domestic?
- Is 'dark chocolate' really dark?
- Is 'intentional grounding' intentional?
- Are 'sanitary landfils' sanitary?
- Is 'civil war' really civil?

I think 'borehole' is a great nickname for Al Gore!

A Scientist Demolishes 'The Melbourne Age' on Global Warming"Let us do what Davidson has failed to do and look at the hidden motive. Europe is just dying to cripple to US economy for its own economic benefit. And the Kyoto protocol is just the thing to poison the US economy. It should also be borne in mind that Europe has a large collection of so-called renewable energy malinvestments that it has to justify."
