I still don't get it. Whose side are the hostages on? How do these thugs get away with invading a church? Why doesn't the Pope send his Swiss Guards?

I think the religious people who are there now have to still live there when this is over. So though they are hostages now, when this is over they will say they invited them as guests. Or, they'll get their throats slit when the troops leave.
