CRUSHING ILLINOIS GUN CONTROL
Apr 15, 2002 | Lazamataz

Des Plaines (LAZ) -- By a 7 to 1 vote, Des Plaines City Council rejected two sweeping pieces of gun control legislation introduced by Alderman Don Smith and heavily and vocally backed by Richard Daley, the Mayor of Chicago.

Des Plaines is twenty miles from Chicago, and is considered a suburb of the city.

Smith introduced both a set of gun dealer restrictions, and a comprehensive assault weapons ban.

The gun dealer restrictions would have forced gun dealers to pay 55$ to the city, undergo fingerprints, be subjected to a criminal background check, and would have prevented gun dealers from operating in a quarter-mile radius of dozens of types of establishments, virtually preventing any gun and ammunition sales in Des Plaines.

The second ordinance would have banned sales and possession of so-called assault weapons, which were defined by name and by features. There was no provision for grandfathering of existing firerams.

The turnout by those opposed to these measures was so large that both the city council meeting and the overflow room were too full for the Des Plaines firefighters requirements, so the remaining individuals needed to watch television monitors set up in the hallways and lobby. The crowd was overwhelmingly opposed to the measure, and occasionally needed to be quieted by the mayor.

After the resolutions were introduced, each of the Aldermen from each of the other seven wards took turns harshly criticizing the legislation.

One Alderman, Dick Sayad (Ward 4), took personal umberage at the legislation, noting that he is a proud owner of three firearms and that his wife is trained and willing to defend herself when he is away. He also pointed out that the way the legislation was written, that no firearms sales could occur within a quarter mile radius of the son or daughter of any veteran, completely eliminating all firearms sales in the city limits.

Another Alderman, Carla Brookman (Ward 5) remarked that she had a flood of emails and calls, "more than I have on any issue ever", and that not one call or email was in favor of the legislation.

First - Laz, thanks for the great article. One, I'm sorry that I could'nt hang around with anyone after, and two I'm sorry that I'm so late coming to this thread.

Second, I hope you all don't mind my bumping you. I thought you might be interested in seeing these pictures.

The Crowd Gathers
1/3 of the room, TheRightGuy bottom right. This was about 5 minutes before they asked all the people without a seat to move to a separate room.
Don "The Enemy" Smith, da mayors pawn.
The first dissenting opinion, notice the Alderwoman giggling in the background as this Alderman, shall we say, reams Smith a ....
The entire Council, 7-1!

Third, I want to point out, again in this thread, the lunacy of the left. Ald. Smith went out of his way to make two points; 1) This is "reasonable gun control legislation" which the majority of Des Plaines and IL voters would approve. Of which the crowd responded, "WHERE ARE THEY THEN???". 2) "If the council was made up of 8th graders, this ordinance would pass 8-0." Yea, Don, uninformed, mushy-brained 8th graders, responsible thinkers. LOL

Thanks to all that attended, even the late arrivers, A.J.Armitage and pistias.

Note that there are no pictures of Laz. That is because there may be Laz and rumours of Laz, but he is a will-o-wisp, a phantom, a riddle wrapped in an enigma inside a puzzle and accompanied by an eggroll and steamed rice.

Does Laz really exist? Or is he just a figment of Free Republic's imagination? Only his barber knows for sure.

The problem is that Chicago and outlying communities, by dint of their ever swelling populations, will soon - if they don't already - have more political pull in Springfield than the downstate folk. If you've got 100 state reps, and 60 of 'em are from the "city," and the other 40 are from places like Clinton and Carbondale, the city libs will most likely be able to have their way with legislation. The soccer moms and race hustlers from Chicago, Peoria and Bloomington-Normal will essentially guarantee the Democrats anything they ask for.

I took pictures of Laz! But they mysteriously disappeared when I off-loaded the pics to my PC. What's with that?

Great FReep report, Laz! Sorry to be so late chiming in on this thread, but the political seminar on my patio after the FReep lasted til midnight. Spintreebob, Pistias, A.J.Armitage, Dan the Bircher, and Rhys the (L) candidate for State Treasurer were in attendance. Together, we solved all of the problems that have occured since creation, just to name a few.

Thank you, FReepers!! The City of Des Plaines was awakened last night (on several occasions).

We have a problem. I learned some things about Jim Ryan. He is undergoing his third bout with cancer right now. He is quite ill and this will negatively impact the campaign.

That means that Blagojovich will likely win unless we work VERY HARD, and that means for 4 years, statewide gun control will be offered about 7 to 12 times every day. No CCW will be offered, and no State Premption law either.

IF this is true, this is a sad day in Illinois for firearms owners.

They say vampires cannot be photographed.

I'm a little pale, no?

I wanted to start that earlier, once I knew we had it locked up! I knew I wanted to post this news article, and also I can't stay out until midnight on a weeknight! That's why I wuz tryin' to pry you off the chair, but the police fellow would not let me bring in my crowbar. ;^)

Oh well. Drink all you want, they'll brew more. :o) We'll get our chance....

Laz, what is your source on this? It's true he has dropped below radar since the primary; but, this is the first I've heard this. If true, I grieve for him and his family.

Is it too late to DRAFT O'MALLEY!

This is really weird - when i logged on this am at about 7:30 the story was posted on the Daily Herald under "More News". Now it's gone! I also checked the "Lake County" section and guess what, not there either.

Hmmmmm.......
