Zhang posed the basic problem while brainstorming with other teenagers last week about putting more punch behind their anti-smoking message: Nothing seems to penetrate the psyche of certain kids.

Tell them that tobacco companies are manipulating them or that smoking will kill them, Zhang said, and all too often the response is "nicotine is awesome."

I might try to grow my own this summer in the garden, I wonder if it is legal to produce tobacco for personal use?

It is legal to grow your own, but there is a limit to how much you can grow, I think the upper limit is half an acre, don't know if there is any such limit in Canada. I want to grow my own as well, but it seems most of the seed sellers have disappeared, anyone with good leads on that, please let me know.

I saw some seed at Wal-Mart of all places last spring, not sure if it was wild seed or the bred variety. I'll let you know if I find anything, thanks

Thanks Steve, but even that wouldn't do me any good here, Wallmart stopped selling anything pertaining to smokes.... years ago.
But please keep an eye out, thanks.

You will be happy to know that if you buy on the black market or legal taxfree from the res, it is now politically correct............ It's called "The informal economy." I got a good giggle out of that one, it was in my paper this morning.

We have a code word in my family that is used when a decision must be made quickly and there is no time for discussion. If I use that code word she will not question what I tell her. Otherwise I will explain the reasoning for my decisions to her.

Good one Joe, but then I always knew you were a smart guy. :-}

Oh! I don't touch Black Market, and the Reservation is a 4 hour drive south of me, so buying tobacco and tubes and rolling my own suits me just fine.

Did they really say "Black Market?" Has THAT started already? Wouldn't surprise me. heh!

So far it's legal to grow up to 1/10th of an acre, steve50, and it'll grow all over the country. Check out SBE Seeds for more information, even how-to videos and books. I think there's a link on Smokers United's Smoke Cheap pages.

Target Market, Schmarget Market. What's far better is 15-year-old Matt Hannula's ANTI-Target Market. He's got it going on!

By the way, young Matt doesn't smoke and doesn't think anyone should, but he understands--unlike everyone from Jesse Ventura on down--that this is not about smoking. It's about freedom.

Steve50, call 1-800-CHEWERS and get Fred Stoker's free catalog for RYO supplies. They have a wonderful selection and even a sampler so you can try out different blends to find the one you like best.

• A third strong deterrent is price. The state Health Department estimates that for each 10 percent increase in cigarette prices, youth consumption falls by 13 percent. In Minnesota, the average price of a pack of cigarettes has jumped more than 50 percent since 1999, to $3.48 a pack, according to industry-supported studies by Orzechowski and Walker, an economic consulting firm in Arlington, Va.

It's a fact and even the antis admit that youth smoking rates declined throughout the '80s and until around 1991, when rates again began to climb. Now, IF youth smoking decreases 13% for each 10% raise in cigarette prices, why is there still ANY youth smoking at all? Anyone remember what the price of a pack was in 1990?

Well....... underground economy, same thing, but isn't it nice to have a fancy word for it. :-}

I also roll my own, but as mouthy as I am, I wouldn't be surprised if some day I will have someone here looking for contraband. HEH.

LOL, just got an invite today from the government TV station, to further comment on my comments.

I don't know about 1990 - but I remember being ticked when the price of a pack in the machine went to 59 cents in 1976. And that was in NYCity.
