Udai told to unarm in father s presence

Arbil, Iraq Press, April 15 – President Saddam Hussein has ordered his elder son to unarm in his presence.

The order was relayed to the 37-year-old Udai by Saddam’s powerful secretary, Abed hameed Mahmoud two weeks ago.

The decision, insiders say, has angered Udai. Saddam is perhaps among the world’s most security conscious leaders but it is the first time he openly suspects one of his own sons.

Though married to three wives with plenty of children, Saddam heavily relies on Udai and Quasai, his sons from his first marriage with Sajida Talfah, a cousin.

The insiders say relations between Mahmoud and Udai have soured recently. Udai believes Mahmoud, one of the most powerful officials in Iraq, was behind the ruling.

It is not clear whether the decision also applies to the younger son, Qusai, currently Saddam’s favourite and probably heir-apparent.

But Udai has been on the move recently in a bid to overshadow Qusai.

Known for his playboy image and fearsome reputation and brutality, Udai is reported to have added several positions to the host of roles he already has.

Analysts believe Saddam is wary of Udai’s growing influence and his frequent meddling in both domestic and foreign polices.

Udai is reputed for his violent rages and uncontrolled behaviour and Saddam takes no chances, the analysts said.

Udai has no testicular fortitude if he accepts that order.

Family reunions must be a real joy. What I'd like to see is an internal coup, followed by a counter-coup, followed by a counter-counter-coup, followed by ... until there's no one left standing except the palace barber.

RE #8

Believe it or not, this is our best case scenario. Enemy imploding under pressure of invasion.

Sadaam isn’t psychotically paranoid, he’s security conscious… VERY security conscious. I guess it must of occurred to him that since it’s his son, the guy is probably at least half as nuts as Sadaam is. Better not to take any chances.

Check out the long article on Saddam in the current Atlantic Monthly by Mark Bowden (the Black Hawk Down author). It's not online yet, unfortunately.

If the portrait that Bowden portrays of Uday is even slightly accurate, then I don't blame Saddam. Uday is almost continuously drunk, and pulls his gun on anyone who angers him.

Re #10

The secret of his longevity in power. security above all concerns. Bu the cost to the rest of population is enormous. This kind of society eventually crumbles. Security conscious men favors loyalty over compentence.

Re #15

This is the guy who beat his father's loyal vallet to death just because his father had affairs with younger woman, bringing shame and humiliation to his mother. He is known to have explosive temper. Looks can be deceiving.

It is the way of Islam for sons to kill their fathers and all of their brothers as the path to power. They've been doing it for hundreds of years. Saddam's "security consciousness" isn't about the Americans.....it is his own tribal relations he has to worry about, ESPECIALLY his sons.
