JERUSALEM, Israel - Just moments after Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat issued a statement of condemnation of Friday's afternoon's suicide bombing attack, the militant Islamic group Hamas announced it had no intention of halting attacks.

"We have the full right to react without any limitation against the state terrorism of Israel," said Ismail Abu Shanab, spokesman for the Islamic militant group Hamas, which has carried out more suicide attacks than any other group.

Friday's attack, which killed six and wounded over 90 in Jerusalem's Mahane Yehuda open-air market, prompted the US to demand Arafat denounce the act before any meeting with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Saturday afternoon Arafat did "condemn all attacks targeting civilians ... especially the attack that took place ... yesterday."

Israeli government officials say the chairmen's words mean little.

"We want deeds, not words," said Danny Ayalon, an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Arafat "cannot keep the strategy of terror and expect us to be impressed by condemnations repeatedly."

Rita Cosby (Fox News) had a little while ago a cell-phone conversation with Arafat's top aide. Crux of the matter: There will be NO cease-fire. Period. No negotiations until Israel pulls out of the "occupied" territories. All of them. So in effect, Arafat (et al) are demanding that all their peace-process end-result hopes be provided up front and in full before they'll even stop bombing long enough to sit down to negotiate! What kind of crock is that???

So why is Colon meeting with Arafat, to take pretty pictures? This won't calm down the jihadist masses in the "Arab [cesspool] street". It will merely show them that terror gets America to act scared of the "Arab street".

Israel needs to announce that each and every member of the next bombers family will be exterminated. Every bomber will know that every member of his/her family will meet Allah. Then do it. The money from Saudi Arabia will mean nothing to them as they will be dead.

This is another way for the media to portray Arafat as an outside observer not able to stop the violence. This is total crap and just a way for Arafat to gain sympathy. This is right out of the terrorist's handbook.

Then Sharon was correct - Arafat is irrelevant. I believe he does hold some power among the palestinians, but that it only goes one way: they'll bomb when he says "go", but keep bombing when he says "stop". This is partly due to their hatred of the Jews, and partly due to the fact that they know Arafat doesn't mean it.

Arafat manages to be both responsible for the bombings, and powerless to stop them.

Colin Powell must know that Arafat will demand an Israeli pull out before anything else happens. Colin Powell also already knows that the Israelis will not pull out. Gee, this feels like 40 years ago.

Just like I said on another thread, Powell will come out of his meeting with Arafat with more demands on Israel while not asking Arafat for anything (except maybe to take a bath). I would be very surprised if Israel comes out with anything good here and they have the US to thank for that.

Geez! Why ridicule Colin Powell? The man is trying to do the best he can, under quite difficult circumstances, and he's well aware this is an impossible situation, and that the status quo will stay the same. This is only a matter of diplomacy, for the US and nothing else.
