The right to hold a hand-held cell phone while driving often results in accidental death and destruction when practiced by the wrong people. I almost got killed right on my block by a woman tearing around a corner while yakking on a cell phone and not watching the light. She could have either worn a headset or set it up on speaker-phone which is another alternative. That would have given her both hands to keep on the wheel.

It's just another reason for the Police to pull you over. A study by the AAA found that there were 7 other factors that caused accidents with more frequency than talking on a cell phone. Chief among these was putting on makeup. Why don't the outlaw THAT? Hmm?

Ditto, stanz - you do not have a right to drive on public roads any way you please.
Now, you can drive on your own private roads on your own property carry three cellphones while sucking down a bottle of Jim Beam, for all I care.
You should not, however, do it on public roads which I pay for with my tax dollars to transport my baby daughter around on.
I'm sick of 40 MPH in the left lane on I-95 while you talk to "Baxter", or seeing you plow through red lights oblivious to almost t-boning me because you're busy making an appointment to have your toes done.
HANG UP THE DAMN PHONE AND DRIVE. You're like a bunch of teenage girls getting chatty all the time...

"7 other factors that caused accidents..."

So, you're saying anything goes? That makes it OK?
What about the thousands of times when no accident is involved because those of us NOT chatting on the phone swerve out of the way for you?

So, let's outlaw EVERYTHING that MIGHT cause an accident SOMEDAY. How's that? Will THAT make you feel better? People die from walking down stairs with shoelaces untied..perhaps THAT needs to be outlawed, too. Where does it end?

Watching the road ahead and two hands on the wheel is ALL any driver is supposed to be engaged in while the car is in motion. Big Mac munching, makeup application and cell phone use should all be ticketable offenses IMHO.

Maybe we should outlaw sneezing while driving. After all, your eyes close when you sneeze. Anyone with a heart condidtion shouldn't drive either...you MAY have a heart attack someday while driving. Better yet, let's all stay home & watch West Wing.

The point is, accidents should be averted when the driver has the means to avert them.

Where does it end?

Who knows?

What we do know is that there a lot of people who can't drive and talk on a cell phone at the same time.

Anyone can see this.

(Unless they are talking on a cell phone and don't notice?)

So, you don't know exactly where it ends, but you're willing to give up your rights for a "feel good" law? Even thought there's seveval things that cause more accidents than talking on a cell phone? I guess we'll keep banning things until they try to ban something that sounds REALLY silly to you? Yeah...THAT makes sense.

"Will THAT make you feel better?"

What is it with this huge emotional attachment you have to your cell-phone?
Let it go, man.
You can't drive while sucking down a bottle of whiskey, either, but that doesn't mean we live in a Police state.
A little rational perspective, huh!

We all have opinions and we all have to make choices.

This is what I see everyday.

That's my story and I"m sticking to it!

IMHO Safety is the issue and there is nothing silly about that.

Driving while talking on a cell does not make you intoxicated. However...you CAN drive down the road while sucking on a coke.

And what else shall we ban in the name of saftey? How well that bill of goods went down in the 1930's Germany. More rights are lost in the name of saftey, children & religion than anything else. I'd rather be a little less safe & more free any day.

Ease up on the caffiene, big fella.
You have a Constitutional right to carry a firearm, where does it say you have a right to chat with your hairdresser while cutting me off in traffic?
And the potty mouth just makes you sound like a spoiled child.
Hang up the phone and drive, it's a highway, not a play room.
