MEDIA ADVISORY

JUDICIAL WATCH UNCOVERS FORMER INS COMMISSIONER MEISSNER’S ORDERS TO DESTROY EVIDENCE IN DECISION TO RETURN ELIAN GONZALEZ TO CUBA AND SUBSEQUENT, ILLEGAL RAID ON GONZALEZ FAMILY HOME

Press Conference For Release of Documents

Date: April 10, 2002

Time: 8:00 AM

Place: Sheraton Biscayne Bay

495 Brickell Avenue

Parlor 3

Miami, FL

(Washington DC / Miami) Judicial Watch, the public interest law firm that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced that tomorrow, April 10, 2002, it will release documents revealing former Immigration and Naturalization Service (“INS”) Commissioner Doris Meissner’s orders to destroy evidence and obstruct justice in the illegal raid that returned Elian Gonzalez to Communist Cuba that resulted in the beating and gassing of dozens of peaceful protestors by INS agents. The documents were produced for the first time today in a trial before the Merit Systems Protection Board (“MSPB”), in Miami, concerning charges of retaliation against INS Special Agent Rick Ramirez, by his supervisors in the Miami District Office of the INS. An INS attorney, Diana Alvarez, produced the documents during sworn testimony in the hearing. Ramirez is an INS whistleblower who initially revealed the INS and Justice Department obstruction of justice and anti-Hispanic prejudice that pervaded the Elian Gonzalez saga.

The documents reveal that the U.S. government had information indicating that Juan Miguel Gonzalez (Elian’s father) had sought to leave Cuba for the United States. They also reveals the U.S. government was aware that Juan Miguel wanted Elian to stay in the U.S. and that the father was being coerced by the Castro regime.

INS attorney Rebeca Sanchez-Roig notes that she was ordered to destroy all documents, but retained a copy of the e-mail because she believed Meissner’s destruction orders to be improper.

Copies of the documents will be made available at the press conference.

*Wink, wink* Geez.......let's see who covers this besides Judicial Watch and Larry Klayman.

Are you suggesting that "coverage" by the mainstream press is the measure of a story's accuracy and worth? In that case, I guess the alleged rape against Clinton either didn't happen or wasn't important since I can name lots of mainstream outlets (such as the LA Times) that to this day have never ONCE mentioned it to their audience. How many of them reported the Riady non-refund recently, Howlin? Is that why you choose to ignore it and my questions to you about it ... because only a few press outlets (e.g., Fox News) mentioned it at all? Is that why you decided there was nothing to the allegation that Ron Brown might have been murdered ... because NONE of the mainstream press organizations have even mentioned the views of the government pathologists, the existence of the suggestive x-rays, the lies of the AFIP management or any of the other hundred incriminating facts?

The truth is that many of the facts most damaging to the Clinton administration and democRAT party were never mentioned by the mainstream press ... only by Klayman and outlets (like Newsmax) that you disparage. The truth is that the only reason we know those facts is because of JW press releases.

Judicial Watch is a lot of things, but it is NOT a media outlet.

Yes, but in a real sense we all depended on him as one during the Clinton years. He did what the real media outlets were not doing ... investigate and then make us aware of what had been found. I have asked you this before ... would you rather we had remained in the dark about Chinagate, Filegate, Emailgate, the Riady non-refund and the facts in the Ron Brown case?

Consider yourself asked.

No, I'm saying Larry Klayman never tells the truth and twists words and what really happens in "issues" he's involved into to suit his agenda.

I've never depended on Larry Klayman for ANY news.....since I believe he only uses the words he wants to to further his cause, which, as everybody knows, is HIS future. If you have been taken in by him, that is your own fault.

You continue to ask all of us questions over and over; I, for one, believe you have fallen hook, line, and sinker for Larry's view of the "truth," which contrary to the number of times you post it, does't make it 1) true, and 2) proveable. You all are just like liberals -- you believe if you say it enough, it will be true.

And since you're always demanding the truth and accountability, can you tell me exactly why it is that Larry Klayman collected over $25,000,000 in 2000 and yet only spent just under $2,000,000 for "legal fees?" If the TRUTH, even as you see it, is so important, why isn't he paying MORE lawyers and court fees to find it?????

I knew I heard these claims before. They were claims made by the US family's counsel trying to keep Elian here. This poorly written document says the family counsel for Elian made the claim that the father applied for a visa. Talk about a circle jerk.

The family's counsel in an effort to keep Elian here raised the unfounded possibility the father may have applied for asylum and then Larry "re-discovers" this.

I'll bet those full page ad's in the Miami papers will be three-color fold outs.

Here's a translation of the scrawl at bottom, courtesy of Carl Limbacher at Newsmax.com:

"On 30 Dec. 1999, I was ordered by Doris Meissner, Commissioner through COC: David Diken - Rachel McCarthy to destroy this cc-mail message and all copies. The Commissioner was very upset about having this information disseminated.

"I indicated to R. McCarthy, after speaking with Dan, that I had been ordered by my boss to write message and forward to her and Jack. Dan and I discussed (illegible) R. McCarthy voicing concerns about destroying cc mail message - sort of cover-up.

"Notwithstanding, I deleted message from my computer, and also from Dan's and Bill's. My concerns about destroying message were such that I felt it necessary to keep a copy of same.

"I believed I was being asked to do something improper and I voiced those concerns to Dan and Rachel. Dan also questioned why destruction of message, but the orders came from Meissner and we were obligated to delete.

"Dan and Rachel also kept copies of message. Tel. conf. held on 12/20 was not confidential in service. State was present during T.C.

"After this incident, we were ordered not to put anything regarding Elian Gonzalez in writing. Ordered by Meissner through David Dixon."

I sure would like to see someone competent like yourself uncover and successfully sue regardings at least one major government scandal a week. suing the government is really so simple, including suing and winning. Looking forward to your detailed and successful progress reports posted on free republic. When can we expect the first one?

It is mainly the press and not Judicial Watch who is claiming that Elian's father had applied for a visa at one time. Read my two newspaper articles that I posted on this thread.

Howlin, we have heard you spat these facts out many times before and out of all the people in the forum to tell about Judicial Watch, BeAChooser is probably the last. Fact is, is that neither of us see a problem with JW's budget.

she was ordered to destroy all documents, but retained a copy of the e-mail because she believed Meissner’s destruction orders to be improper.

She thought the destruction order was "improper" so she kept the email, but destroyed the documents anyway? In other words, she wasn't concerned about right or wrong, just Cover Your A@%.

Well really.... what does the following statement from the "ethical Washington Watchdog" say about the press...... I don't see the press mentioned anywhere in it? Do You? I believe it is the "eWW" making the statement...

Okay, I see what you mean. It does say that in the Judicial Watch press release. (There is even a rather annoying grammatical error in that paragraph)

But also be aware that the media was also reporting it to be this way. In the Miami Herald article that I posted today, it stated:

"The Dec. 29, 1999, memo, cited on the first day of a federal employee grievance proceeding in Miami, also noted that some INS officials believed Elián's father -- Juan Miguel González -- at one time sought an immigrant visa to the United States and that his calls to his relatives in Little Havana might have been monitored by the Cuban government. It's the first time this memo has surfaced since the Elián saga began on Thanksgiving Day 1999."
