A Blast from the Past! But definitely worth reading in case you'd missed the more recent iterations of it on FR. And pertinent. Have a great week, all.

This guy is right on the mark.
Its a great read and perfectly explains the Crusades.
I read a book recently on the Crusades which has a different take, however, on why the Crusading spirit died out. It makes sense, in addition to the author's point that the Christian west was too busy killing each other over minor issues of Christian theology to successfully continue an armed struggle with a common enemy.
The author of this book said that the Crusading purpose was attenuated with respect to its original lofty goals by subverting Crusading movements into attacks on non-Mulsims - for instance, the Albigensian "Crusade" directed at non-mainstream Christians, the Teutonic Knights carrying out a mission against the pagans of the Baltic Region, the hijacking of a Crusade (the 4th?) into an attack on Zara, a Christian city, and later Constantinople itself, another Christian city. Furthermore, the Crusades lost the important support of the Italian mercantile states of Genoa nd Venice which provided substantial naval and military support to crusading armies when they discovered they could make more money by trading with Muslims than killing them.
All of the latter carries with it an important message for the present. Christians and all non-Muslims had better wake up and stop arguing among each other over matters of theology. Believe what you want and extend that privilege to others. Unless we all unite against the Muslim menace, they will conquer us all piecemeal.
We must STOP trading with the Arab states for energy. Petrodollars provide the wealth which funds the latest series of Jihadist attacks against us. Without our money the Muslims would be powerless. The Venetians and Genies made a fortune selling Turkic and Circassian slaves to the Muslims. These same slaves were turned into the Mameluke army which later drove all the Christians from the Levant or enslaved them.
