Mencken is King! I read an anthology of his work -- his heyday being in the 20's and 30's -- a few years ago. Find it and read it. It's hilarious!

His 1925 eluogy of William Jennings Bryan is a classic. If you believe FDR is the father and Woodrow Wilson is the grandfather of all in the world that is f***** up, than Bryan is the GREAT grandfather!

Bryan was a combination of Adlai Stevenson (loser), Al Gore (insufferable), and Hillary Clinton (puke inducing) all rolled into one.

And Mencken was the only one with the balls to say so.

The concept that we all have the right to not be offended is ruining the country.

Today, alas, he'd be considered anything from a far right wingnut (by the left) to a venal lunatic and unrealistic obstructionist bent on throwing it all to the left by default (by today's alleged right).

I think I'm going to pick up A Mencken Chrestomathy and reread now that I am on the right....be interesting to see if my understanding and perspective on his writing has changed. I sure have!!!! Thanks.

"The concept that we all have the right to not be offended is ruining the country."

Too true. Isn't it obvious to people? It has to be turned around and headed another direction?

It is my observation that Europe being an old culture and there for us to see their "mistakes objectively", now and before ... that still we do the 'same things' that we see failed miserably. As well as the things that are greatly hampering their countries today. It's a sort of myopic blindness ... that it will work for our country when it didn't work for them Communism, socialism, gun confiscation, socialized medicine. weakened military, U.N. involvement, one world order, etcerta ... We are making some very bad choices.

It is a path we are following on with ... look at France ... just one example.

"Vigilence is the price of freedom"

I like those surveys where they show people the language of the bill of rights and the majority oppose it.

One thing I might do that the French do. Go sit at the street corner, sip my favorite beverage, and watch beautiful women walk by. For those of us riding off into the sunset.

All of this has come to pass under the current Constitution. There is no need for Mencken's version.

Maybe we could get Congress to propose his language as more "realistic." Yes, I dare to use Congress and realistic in the same senttence. : )
