Shadegg will have GOP opponent

A political newcomer who vows not to take "special interest" money is running for Congress against four-term fellow Republican John Shadegg.

Dusko Jovicic, 27, an apartment-rental businessman with a degree in finance from Arizona State University, said Shadegg is a "solid conservative (but) I feel I can directly represent the people better."

Jovicic said he will make a "six-figure" commitment to his own campaign, which will focus on issues of campaign finance reform, support for military operations and an outreach to Hispanic voters.

He said he will conduct part of his campaign in Spanish, which he learned during his 12 years in the Valley and as an exchange student in Madrid for one year.

Jovicic said he will accept no money from special interests, but will rely instead on "individual contributions from ordinary Arizonans."

Jovicic, who is of Serbian ancestry, said he served for 2 1/2 years until February as an interpreter for NATO peacekeepers in Bosnia and Kosovo.

He said his candidacy in the Sept. 10 Republican primary was prompted in large part by a "sincere commitment to every service member deployed around the world."

U.S. involvement in international conflicts, particularly in Kosovo, needs clarification and exit strategies, he said.

Jovicic and Shadegg are the only candidates so far in the newly drawn Congressional District 3, encompassing much of Phoenix as far south as Thomas Road in places, and all of Paradise Valley, Carefree, Cave Creek and New River.

Sounds like this guy is taking some pages from the McCain-Feingold playbook. Interesting. And there are no Democrats in the race yet.

taking...pages from...McCain-Feingold Playbook...

My first take on that statement is to avoid this guy like the plague!
Does anyone here know anything more about him?

Congressmen don't get much more conservative than Shaddegg. This guy should have ran for one of the open seats if he's serious. Otherwise, he's just a spoiler.

Shadegg was very outspoken against CFR during the House floor debate so I find it interesting that this guy is going up against Shadegg with the "special interests" mantra.

The only thing more I could find out about him was he is a 1993 graduate of Coronado High School.

Jovicic said he will make a "six-figure" commitment to his own campaign, which will focus on issues of campaign finance reform [codeword for closet moderate="liberal"].

Those areas sound very conservative to me, except maybe the limousine liberals in Paradise Valley. He can only beat Shadegg if he is to the right of him. Anyway, if the Repulsive is profiling this guy he must be bad... they (i.e., Keven Willey and her slaves) only love commies.

you got it, if the AZ Repub is touting this guy, that means watch out, better not trust him. He spent all that time in Serbia as translator. What contacts did he make there that led him to do this? Who's behind him in other words.

thanks for posting.

John shadegg is a stand-up guy. I believe the Republicans in arizona deserve a severe chastising from the voters in november at the state level given how they've mis-managed things.

But John Shadegg should be re-elected. Shadegg was a friend of Barry Goldwater's from way back. Shadegg is short, but he does his job. He always presses the conservative cause in a professional manner as well, not as a hothead or showman. He is also honest. In 1995 Shadegg was grilling Reno on Waco at hearings. He was just a congressman, but he did the right thing.

We'd be fools to even think about voting for anyone but shadegg in that race.

Unfortunately, I'll have to vote democrat, because I live in JD Hayworth's district.

Do you really think that Campaign finance reform is a conservative issue?
