I saw a snake hunt in the Mts. of North Ga. once. The hunters would pour a cup of gasoline into a suspected den. The fumes would flush out whatever was living in there.
Being N. Ga., More copperheads were caught than rattlers.

Gasoline for this purpose has been outlawed in Texas. They found that this is inforced under the clean air/water act and can fine you accordingly.
