Bring Back the Blue Border!

Posted on 03/31/2002 10:09:16 AM PST by Texaggie79

It appears that some blind FReepers have talked John into making the border a white background. This has caused several things. First, there is no division and the whole page is cluttered. Second, it looks very amateurish, while the blue border added a VERY professional look.

Don't worry, I'm not threatening to leave over it, like some whiners, but I just want to make a thread to see how other FReepers feel about the Blue border. I want to know who the blind FReepers are that think it actually looks better and would risk newcomers thinking that this is some rank amature site that has just started.

He killed the professional look of this site by removing a time proven colored border. Do you ever go to other sites? This is a norm. People are used to division, just read the replies in this thread. You come here now and get bombarded with a big cluttered mess.

Like I said, I prefer a colored border, and the Townhall.com comparison is a good one.

Having said that, I like the darker blue that's still on our profile pages better than the grey/blue we saw yesterday.

What do you think of the idea of allowing us to customize our "Latest Post" page so that we can see all forums at once? What about color-coded fonts or bullets to help distinguish the different forums on the same page?

I'm more suprized that people actually like this white on white. It goes against everything I have learned as a web designer and have seen with internet users.

Drudge Report disagrees with you.

And lots of people want to retain their jobs.

I have no problem if it switchable as an option. That way you can have your colors, and yet working freepers who surf for a moment here or there will continue to recieve a paycheck (and perhaps donate to FR).

This site now looks like an amature hack job without color difference.

Disagree.

Whitespace is important in a website.

Repeat: I don't care if JohnRob wants to make colored borders something you can customize. But I want white on white.

The first thing I thought, well, after waiting for it to load, was that it looked like a Yahoo! Club site message board and I thought, "This is a step back, away from clarity and functionality."

I completely agree with ya there. John went all pastel there at the end. I hoped it was just for easter.

I think that would be a good idea. But it should be done as a new type of lookup. I still think there should be a separate thread list for all forums, however, I think an "all threads in one" latest posts like our self searches do would be a great option. That would solve a LOT of complaints here at FR.

It's official, you are weird........... :-P

White space is important, but no color division is maddness. Or at the very least a little line divider.

I agree with what you said - colored border yes, and this is just a request - you're stuck with me here regardless.

The Drudge report doesn't have a navigation panel. It's one big page of links. If he had other sections to his site, he would put up some type of divider between the links and the navigation menu. This is common sense.

Personally it would suit me fine if there was no sidebar on the left. The actual content area is too small. Otherwise, I like it better this way. The simpler the better.

Guess I'm one of those BLINDIES who complained about the color on color. Not all of us are blessed with perfect vision. We can't help our problems. Even the docs can only do so much for us. I love FR and want the best for all of us.

A very LIGHT GRAY with real DARK blue print wouldn't come amiss. to make the changes you suggest. LOVE the bigger fonts. Cause even with tri-focals I have problems seeing size 8 pica. Stronger lenses won't fixt the problems either, and I'm years away from cataract surgery so I'm told.

Yes - if such existed, I would use it constantly, as a "base of operations" on this site.

Have you advance to 1024x768 resolution yet. That is becoming more and more a norm. It makes FR a LOT better IMHO.

For a border, I'd suggest a soft blue border, almost like a watermark. Would allow for seperation of tasks on the page, and would be low contrast for the vision impared.

A couple of other points...

On incoming mails, we can no longer click to the sender's profile page. I'd like that back, and be able to "Find in Forum" frm the e-mail, as well as the page.

Also, when somone e-mails us from a thread, I'd like to be able to click on the title to go check out the thread... Is that possible? It would eliminate a lot of intermediate clicking and loading of pages, saving time and bandwidth.

Can you not see Townhall.com? What about NewsMax.com? It has a blue navigation panel. FR is now the only site that does white on white, except for little johnny's first website on geocities.

Woke up this morning wishing that the Robinsons had come to their senses and put FR back the way it was. Obviously they are wedded to the hip Yahoo concept that John said he's aiming for. No amount of discussion will change this fact.

So as a compromise, what if the wizards could provide the option to display the page in "Old Style?" Those of us with poor eyesight could then go back to reading clear, simple, wide-screen graphics of one color and font. And just to show how long I've been reading here, how about if we could choose the red font again?

The all-white is so boring also. I like the other changes that have been made, however. We are just about there I think. Just please, get some blasted color on the page.
