It was so clean it was un-noticed by his enemies, and decried by his supporters, but GWB has just demonstrated a political ability that no-one on the left, and very few on the right ever saw.....
I always refer to the old Zorro scene with Basil Rathbone as the villian slicing a candle to show Tyrone Power how deft he is with a sword, because when "Zorro" does it the candle doesn't move....(The point is then shown that Tyrone's cut was SOOOOO smooth he sliced the candle so well he cut it without moving it....a truly great scene)
The First Lady did the same thing to Algore with her "...My husband sleeps with a teacher EVERY night..." comment that was so smooth a cut most of the media hasn't picked up the wound even today....
Well good Freeper Friends, that's what Old George did to the left with Johnny McCain's unconstitutional CFR Bill....
He fooled them into passing a billl that allowed more hard money, (something they would never ever allowed because it has NEVER, EVER been raised by anyone like our Commander and Chief) allowing them to include provisions that they thought would give them the edge, while knowing that others would attack and have thrown out all the offending provisions before they ever took effect, but the severably would allow the things not challanged to stand: Outcome
hard money limits have been raised and will stay raised, and the bad parts will be strck down, and we can now see that McCain was always working with GWB and the poor dems never knew it.....
What a political play.......cut to the bone and not even seeing it til after surgery is complete......

The analogy holds, doesn't it? If Bush is brilliant for signing it, who's more brilliant than the man who sponsored it? And who's more stupid than the 80% of GOP Congressional reps, who voted against the bill?

That's an unfair characterization, and I think you know it. The people objecting to the bill have by and large done so based on principled reasons. I daresay the majority voted for Bush in 2000 (I did). Holding our elected representatives to the promises they made during their campaign is not the same as a lynching, and it's disappointing to hear folks on this forum equating the two.
IMHO, "they" did not break dad's gonads, they merely harped on it endlessly, convincing those of wavering intent that principle should be uppermost, not the Presidency, and smiled knowingly when the waverers took the bait and ran with it.
Liberals had no power to bust balls, merely to give lip service (no pun intended). It was the stay-at-homes that busted dad's gonads.
I actually think some of the stuff was added by the dems. If McCain had these provisions in from the get-go, then McCain himself was trying to manufacture veto bait to cause trouble, which is his overriding misssion in life. He got his bill. He did not get his photo-op, or even his name on the bill. The Supreme Court will strike down those parts unconstitutional, and he will have to find another way to get his face on the Sunday shows.

Who's to say it's BUSH who isn't in on the plan? Maybe McCain initiated the master stroke by drafting the bill, and Bush unwittingly signed it?
That's the whole point - this credit being given to Bush is based on no facts, only wishes. People want him to be the master strategist, and so that's what they've made him out to be. I wish he was as well, but in this case I'm pretty sure his decision was based on simple politics.

Yes, perot definately played a large part.
What I always wondered was how could an intelligent person that had followed papa bush's 4 year tour, and dumped him because they did not believe "read my lips", could then vote for perot because they could BELIEVE anything Perot said??.
Both clinton and bush got their 33%. Clinton then added to that with persuasion of fence sitters, while bush lost his share to perot's persuasive tactics. To this day, I believe perot's sole function in that debacle was to strip votes from bush, a man he despised. A mission in which he definately succeeded. There was no way perot was going to get the majority of a three way race, and he knew it. The clinton team gave him a long leash, as long as the effect was to strip votes from bush. If it were to swing the other way, the dem machine would have been at perot's heals faster than a starved junk yard dog.
You have to remember that this becomes the mantra for a few who will adopt it as their charge for the next few years. Most every post they make will come back in some way to this topic just like Ron Brown/Vince Foster does for others.
The bottom line at this point is what can be done. To continue to rant about the bill is useless as it has been signed and is now law. Either push and help support the effort in the SCOTUS or get on the bandwagon of finding enough legislators to pass another bill reversing the current one. That is where this process is at this time...
Given a few days this want even be in the news and only the diehard ranters will be bringing it up here...
