Bush signed the measure in the Oval Office — without the public signing ceremony often staged for major legislation.

I'm glad the NRA has filed suit. And if he had to sign it to bury it, I'm glad he did it in the Oval office to rob McCain and Feingold and Shays and Meehan of their glory! Now the Democrats can't use it as a club in the next election.

And for all of those who are threatening NOT to vote for Bush because of this, why don't you give it some time to see what happens BEFORE you do anything rash. It was obvious that the shift in power in the Senate helped this along. Work hard to get some more Repubs. in Congress, and if it has to be a RINO, try to get the least egregious RINO you can find; at least the Repubs. would be in charge of the committees again. Do you really want Bush to have to battle against the Democrat controlled Senate Judiciary Committee for the next few years in order to get his judicial nominees? If you want to see some REAL change, we HAVE to get some more conservative Supremes, and where Dem Senators will not be affected by pressure from the White House, a Repub. might!

Others may prefer philosophical purity, I just want the Repubs. in charge of the committees again because Bush's agenda has no chance otherwise!

It's all bluster. When Howard Phillips is the alternative in 2004, we'll see how much outrage is still in the pipeline.

I think you are missing the point. Political calculations may have forced Bush to side with stem cell research, but this is something that needed leadership. If Bush chose to be a leader, he could have taken this to the American people and tell them why he would veto this bill. His 80% popularity would have made things easier. He backed off when he had a chance to be a leader. He bucks to pressure too quickly.

Amen! C'mon, folks, put up or shut up. Are we going to give this guy a good hand, or will we be led on the path to the political equivalent of suicide charges?

Okay...this is the argument I'm having the most trouble with. My (former as of today) party, the GOP, just wiped their collective @sses with the U.S. Constitution.

You and a lot of other people are telling me to calm down and work to get more GOPers elected so that I can....

What was the reason again?

"Miracles do not cluster. Hold on to the Constitution of the United States of America and the Republic for which it stands-- what has happened once in six thousand years may never happen again. Hold on to your Constitution, for if the American Constitution shall fail there will be anarchy throughout the world." -Daniel Webster

Work hard to get some more Repubs. in Congress,

Now how are we supposed to do this when the only voice that can be legally heard during the last two months of an election campaign is the liberal media?
