Suburb sterilizes deer instead of killing them

Shooting deer with contraceptive darts hasn't culled the burgeoning herds. Neither have birth control pills. And now--in a radically different tactic--Highland Park is using a mobile operating room in the first experiment of its kind to sterilize animals that regard suburban landscaping as just so much salad.

The Lake County community has joined forces with the University of Wisconsin at Madison and the Milwaukee County Zoo, hoping to sterilize surgically 20 white-tail does in a project other deer-plagued cities are watching closely.

So far, 14 does have been sterilized in the project, which started in late January and is scheduled to wind down this month because many animals are already too pregnant to be operated on safely.

Heavens - we wouldn't want to abort any unborn deer, would we?

Maybe they can do the same thing with the rats in the cities! The mobile operating rooms could probably be carried in a pocket.

Every good urbanite should carry one!

The easiest way to sterilize the deer population is to force the bucks to watch Oprah every day for a month.

True. It does have that effect on the female population.

"Female deer live in social groups and are all related, so hopefully if we sterilize the females and their daughters, the population will not grow," she said.

If I understand my biology correctly, if the females are sterilized, how can they have daughters. If they do have daughters, then the sterilization ain't workin'.

I truly hope this fails miserably (as it will) because if it succeeded even a little bit they will want to do it here in the Amherst area.

Bait and Shoot is the answer!

Next step is vasectomies for bucks! But then again, condoms would be less expensive.

Some years ago when I lived in Connecticut, I was complaining to a gentleman living upstate that the damn deer made my yard look like a feed lot every winter. His comment was "That may be true down in those suburbs near NYC, but up here when we see a deer, we see lunch."

I hope this idiotic program fails and all the expensive landscaping is decimated. Perhaps the local schmuks will abandon their homes altogether and allow the deer to take up residence.

The deer HAVE taken up residence, that's their problem. This project will become the "Vets Full Employment Act" if they expect to be successful. Perhaps that's exactly what the Vet has in mind.

If this program works, there are places in the world where it should be implemented on humans too.

In some parts of the country there are mobile poultry facilities that travel from one small producer to another and process a small holders chicken flock on site, its a chicken factory on wheels.

Couldnt we turn the homeless advocates against the Peta people by turning one of these trucks into a bum feeding venison factory?
