When I heard Mara Liason going on and on about Bush breaking a campaign promise. . .

Thank you, Miss Marple, for bringing this back to my attention. I saw her on FNSunday saying this. It affirmed what I had thought all along, that Leftists will use this as a means to depress the enthusiasm of the base of the Right.

How right I was.

President Bush is playing a political gambit, without a doubt. I couldn't figure out his angle, but I knew something was in the works. In my humble opinion, this bill should not have even reached the Oval Office. The GOP in the House and Senate failed us here because they didn't want to appear as "anti-reform" for this coming election season.

All know that CFR is unconstitutional. McCain, the undercover RAT he is, thinks he is harming Bush by this. But if Sen. McConnell and his legal team get this this before the Supreme Court and have it struck down, Bush will come out smelling like a rose as far as today's body politic is concerned. His signing the bill removes the weapon of his enemies.

But let me be honest here. I don't like it, but I understand that this is politics. Politics is a bloodsport, not a collegiate debating club. What really gets me is when our people hammer, and rightly so, the Right for being "spineless." Yet, when we finally have someone willing to politically take to task the Left, we still complain!

Blaming a politician for being a politician is like blaming a dog for being a dog. And, just as surgery is best left to surgeons, politics is better left to politicians.

Good post. Sums up how I've come to view the CFR debate, as well.
I don't like the President's decision, but I understand it.

The GOP in the House and Senate failed us here because they didn't want to appear as "anti-reform" for this coming election season.

Absolutely. Congressional Republicans deserve much of the blame for this.
They passed the buck, and will continue to do so until we get rid of some of the Rino's.
I hope the White House is finally getting the message about how important it is to support and elect
CONSERVATIVE Republicans.

I posted this last night and it seems to agree with the NY post analysis. This is not rocket science and anyone with the least amount of common sense could have figured this out

Yea, that's why the lawmakers swear an oath to "uphold the Constitution", right? If they cannot tell what is Constitutional or not, they have no business being in congress. The judiciary is a citizens last (legal) defense against a tyranical government, the representitives should be the first.

I don't disagree at all. However, when most legislation is passed out of congress with the majority required, by definition, they have said it is constitutional. This one is strange in that even those that sponsor it and those that voted on it democrat and republican concede that parts of the bill are likely unconstitutional. The CFR that has been in place has heavily favored the democrats and their cash cows the unions. Now why did they pass a bill that all of a sudden dries up their advantage in soft money and expands the GOP advantage in hard money. Then you have to ask why did they place so many poison pills in it. I believe that the politico's in the Whitehouse smell veto bait. Bush veto’s, the old CFR stays in place and in 2002 the issue is Bush's veto of CFR. In other words "don't throw me in the briar patch". Now is that me claiming that this is a grand strategy on the part of Bush? No it is me and if I could think of it, then anyone could think of it why not the Bush team?

I agree with you completely ! It is waaaaaaay past time, for the armchiar pundits here, who don't have enough political savvy to lick envelopes, to stop trying to out think President Bush, whilst bashing him to pieces.
