The Washington Post reported today that President joked about signing the unconstitutional Shays-Meehan campaign finance reform bill passed by the Senate last week.

Bush, in a statement issued Wednesday night, had expressed misgivings about whether parts of the bill were constitutional but said that he would sign the bill anyway.

His decision to sign the bill has kicked up a firestorm of dissent in the conservative community, including a scathing editorial by The Washington Times and a letter from the American Conservative Union signed by 60 conservative leaders.

compromise

I gather you aren't a strategist?

You're the type that marches in red coats in straight lines while the enemy fires from behind the trees?

When Bush violates the Constitution, he is no better than Clinton or any other socialist. Bush swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, and he is, in his own words going to violate that oath. In that sense, he is worse than Clinton because he has stated that he knows that what he is doing is wrong.

Bush also has a responsibility to be a check on the Congress and to veto legislation that he considers illegal or un-Constitutional. He is therefore, abdicating the responsibilities of his office.

At least Clinton tried to hide behind his idea of the "law". Bush makes no such pretense. That you and others would allow Bush to do so, tells me that the socialists/communists have made serious inroads into the legal and legislative processes of this country. It also tells me that there will be another war in this country, Balkan style.

I don't know if you have ever claimed to be of conservative principles, but if you did it was a lie.

Not at all, but to bring the spirit of the form of compromise under discussion into your allegory:

The men behind the trees will agree to come out from behind the trees and lay down their weapons in exchange for bayonets and ammunition.

And I'll say it here if I haven't yet: This bill eliminates the Informed Voter by restricting access to vital information on the candidates FOUR MONTHS out of every year. The Informed Voter, that's me, and possibly you, forms a significant part of the Republican base.

BTW: Don't mistake my use of your allegory as anything *but* Clintonesque in nature, if you have problems understanding it.

What you say here is not true today! Many years ago I was not a conservative, but one of them dumb ole demorats, a verry harrrrd corrre demorat, but after learning what my party was really about, I changed. Sure, there are many things I still don't understand on the political front of things, but one thing I'm sure of in my heart is that I don't think Bush isn't all that bad of a President compared to Bill and Hillybeast. Somehow, in my heart, I believe that God is in control of things, while man, thats a whole other matter. I truly believe that we are probably nearing what I learned from my Bible teachings and that is "The Battle of Armageddon" is just right around the corner, and no one wins but God!
Besides, we who know are historical teachings from the Bible, sooner or later a powerful country such as ours will have to fall, and we will cause that fall by slowly deteriorating within our own country which we have been doing since about twenty or thirty years ago!
All I can really say is that I do trust God more than I do man, because man is not perfect, but Bush sure beats having that blue necked Gore in as president, in my opinion! Grassontop

Alan Keyes Is Making Sense, Thursday, March 21, 2002

KEYES: But, first of all, do you think it makes sense — this campaign-finance reform bill has passed. Everybody‘s rejoicing. And there is President Bush declaring that, “Well, I see its flaws. It is constitutional flawed.”

And he saw those flaws during the campaign and understood that one shouldn‘t sacrifice constitutional rights for the sake of phony reform, and yet, in spite of the truth that is right there in front of him that he himself has admitted in his run up to the presidency, he says now that he is going to succumb and sign a bill that he knows is unconstitutional.

He took an oath to uphold the Constitution. How can he put his signature on something that he knows does not conform with it? Does this make sense?

No disagreement with you on your objections to the bill. I am counting on SCOTUS to strike that provision down, and I believe George is, too. And I pray we aren't wrong. Just saying the President has a lot of strategery he has to juggle, which we don't, and that I trust him, that his reasons are derived from love of this country and what it stands for and his efforts to insure the country survives.

Can you believe it? Almost all the democrats voted to take Free Speech away from the American people during an election and tried to do this while a war was going on? A war that is on our soil, having been attacked here in New York and in DC during the attack on America on September 11th.

This is un-heard of in American History. When the people hear this, what will they say?

I appreciate your remarks; but it is not about your cake and ice cream. It is about seeing this country going down the tubes and I have had about all the patience I can stand while this country is being taken apart.

You know, God promised He wouldn't give us more than we can bare, and in Bushes case, just a little bit more patients and we might see the light at the end of the tunnel! Keep the course and see that Bush and God are working hand in hand! Grassontop

Bush did make one lighthearted reference to domestic matters today. Asked whether he would "reluctantly or wholeheartedly" sign new campaign finance legislation, given his criticism of the bill, Bush said, "It will be a signature. I won't hesitate. It will probably take about, you know, about three seconds to get to the 'W.' I may hesitate on the period, and then rip through the 'Bush.'‚"

Some effin' joke. Thank you, o venerated hind wipe.

In this case, the simplest answer appears to be that Bush really doesn't care about our Rights or the Constitution.

I'll up the ante; he doesn't know about our rights or the Constitution.

TLB, I don't lord my position as a leader of the D.C. Chapter over anyone to add weight to my arguments and I wish others wouldn't either. I'd rather my arguments stand or fall on their merits.Thank you.

Yawn...aren't you tired cheering yet? Oh yes, now I remember what the debate was about...CFR is all the democrat's fault and not George W's, even though it was W. that signed this bill into law. Okay, still don't get the logic behind your reasoning yet, but then again, that doesn't surprise me.

Your pryamid is getting a little shaky if you ask me.

Better be careful...when people disagree with TRLB, he calls them a RAT and then tries to make some sort of pithy analogy.

"I have had about all the patience I can stand while this country is being taken apart."

I agree with your wholeheartedly. Perhaps the most insulting aspect about this entire argument, is that now the Cheerleaders are injecting God and the signing of CFR into the same equation, as if it were manifest destiny or pre-destined to happen. Perhaps God allowed George W. Bush to be elected to remind us to never make the same mistake twice. Or perhaps it is now truly safe to say that George W. Bush has a great future behind him.

"It sounds like President Bush is about to be FReeped by his own supporters. Because he wants to trash the constitution Do you know who started this thread? Warlord of the D.C. Chapter of FreeRepublic.com kristinn"

Is this your latest pithy quote of the day? Suffice it to say, you are certainly not Ben Franklin, so if you do not agree with Kristinn, why don't you debate him on the issues, rather than sling the usual mud?

I am making this comment now after finally getting rid of a virus on my comp and able to get back online. Anyway, I am disappointed in Bush and let the WH know it. The operator even went so far as to say "I understand what you are saying;" obviously they have been hearing about this. I do not know if this will cost Bush my vote in 2004. Earlier when I first heard he would sign this I was so pissed, I could not stand up. But, I have found out the bill is not AS bad as what I had thought, but that does not mean it is a good bill either....it is still very bad and I believe while Bush probably had a good motive in signing it (he is not a selfish man), he still did not fulfill his Constituional responsibility and I find that disappointing.
